The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is stepping into 2026 with something to prove. The Golden Lions have unveiled a 12-game football schedule that blends marquee neutral-site spectacles, a high-profile SEC road trip, and a demanding Southwestern Athletic Conference slate — a lineup that signals UAPB is ready to be taken seriously on the national HBCU stage.

The season opens August 29 in Little Rock, where the Golden Lions face Morehouse College in the Natural State Kickoff Classic at War Memorial Stadium. It marks the program’s first return to the state capital for a home-designated contest since 2017, reviving a tradition that carries deep cultural weight for Golden Lions fans. The Golden Lions and Morehouse last met in 2018, when Morehouse edged UAPB 34-30 in Pine Bluff — making this rematch one of the more compelling early-season storylines in HBCU football.

A Date With the SEC

Just five days after the Little Rock opener, the Golden Lions travel to Columbia, Missouri, to face the Missouri Tigers on September 3 in a nationally televised game on the SEC Network. It is the program’s first visit to an SEC venue since facing Arkansas in 2021, and the spotlight opportunity gives head coach Alonzo Hampton’s squad a chance to introduce the Golden Lions to a wider audience before conference play begins.

The Golden Lions then head to Memphis on September 12 for the 37th Annual Southern Heritage Classic, squaring off against Alcorn State at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The matchup is one of the most celebrated events on the HBCU football calendar, drawing fans from across the region and serving as a cultural cornerstone of the fall sports season. UAPB makes their Pine Bluff home debut the following week, hosting Central State on September 19 at Simmons Bank Field before a bye on September 26.

The SWAC Grind Begins

Conference play hits full throttle in October. The Golden Lions open the month with a road trip to Southern in Baton Rouge on October 3, followed by a second bye on October 10. UAPB returns home October 17 to host Alabama State in what is expected to be one of the most spirited Homecoming celebrations in recent memory, drawing alumni and supporters back to Pine Bluff in force.

The stretch run features back-to-back road and home matchups that will test UAPB’s depth and resilience. The Golden Lions travel to Tallahassee to face Florida A&M on October 24 — a SWAC program that has become one of the conference’s most formidable in recent years — before returning home October 31 to host Bethune-Cookman.

November and the SWAC West Race

The final stretch carries serious divisional implications. The Golden Lions visit Grambling State on November 7 in one of HBCU football‘s most storied rivalries, then close out the home schedule November 14 against Prairie View A&M on Senior Day. The regular season wraps November 21 in Houston against Texas Southern.

The full 2026 Golden Lions schedule is as follows:

  • 08/29 — vs. Morehouse (Little Rock, War Memorial Stadium)
  • 09/03 — at Missouri (SEC Network)
  • 09/12 — vs. Alcorn State* (Memphis, Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium)
  • 09/19 — vs. Central State (Pine Bluff)
  • 09/26 — Open Date
  • 10/03 — at Southern*
  • 10/10 — Open Date
  • 10/17 — vs. Alabama State* (Homecoming)
  • 10/24 — at Florida A&M*
  • 10/31 — vs. Bethune-Cookman*
  • 11/07 — at Grambling State*
  • 11/14 — vs. Prairie View A&M* (Senior Day)
  • 11/21 — at Texas Southern*

Hampton’s Fourth Year and What It Means

Hampton enters his fourth season at the helm with a 9-26 overall record and a 2-6 SWAC mark from 2025. The pressure to show tangible growth is real. But the 2026 schedule — packed with visibility, tradition, and high-profile matchups — gives the Golden Lions every opportunity to turn a corner. A strong showing in Little Rock, a competitive performance in Columbia, and a deep run through the SWAC West could change the narrative entirely. For a program with a proud HBCU legacy and a passionate fanbase, the 2026 season represents more than just a schedule — it is a statement of ambition.
