Tiger Woods was involved in a rollover car crash in Jupiter Island, Florida on This afternoon, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. near Beach Road and involved two vehicles, one of which overturned. Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek told reporters that Woods did not appear to have sustained injuries at the scene.

Woods complied with a breathalyzer test at the scene but declined to provide a urine sample when taken to a local jail. Declining to provide a urine sample when requested can carry a misdemeanor charge under Florida law. Excel Sports Management, which represents Woods, had not issued a public statement as of Friday evening.

Coming just days after his competitive return

The timing of the crash carries particular weight. Woods had appeared in the TGL Finals on Tuesday, his first competitive appearance in over a year following surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon and a separate back procedure. The return had been closely watched by the golf world, which has followed his physical recovery with a mixture of admiration and concern for several years.

Woods, 49, is one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport, having won 15 major championships across a career that has also included a series of serious physical setbacks. His net worth is estimated by Forbes at $1.5 billion, making him one of only two active billionaire athletes alongside LeBron James.

A history on Florida roads

Today’s crash is not the first time Woods has been involved in a serious vehicle incident. In February 2021, he was critically injured when his SUV left the road in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, rolling down a hillside and leaving him with severe fractures to his right leg and ankle that required emergency surgery. Investigators determined he had been traveling well above the posted speed limit at the time. The Los Angeles County Sheriff credited his seat belt and the deployment of multiple airbags with saving his life. He returned to professional competition roughly 14 months after that crash.

Before the 2021 incident, Woods was arrested in 2017 on suspicion of driving under the influence in Jupiter, Florida. He was not found to have alcohol in his system at that time and attributed the matter to a reaction to prescription medication. He entered a diversion program to resolve that case.

What comes next

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the crash remains under investigation. No charges had been announced publicly as of this evening, though the declined urine sample could factor into any subsequent legal proceedings depending on what investigators determine about the circumstances of the crash.

For a figure who has spent the better part of a decade managing his public image alongside genuine physical recovery, Friday’s incident arrives at a delicate moment. His appearance at the TGL Finals earlier this week had been treated as a sign of forward momentum, a reminder of what he had worked through to remain connected to the sport. What Friday’s crash signals about where he goes from here remains to be seen.

The golf community’s reaction was still forming Tonight, with the investigation ongoing and Woods’ own account of events not yet made public. Updates from the sheriff’s office and from his representatives were expected in the days ahead.
