A Monday evening that began like any other night near one of South Florida’s most prominent entertainment destinations ended with one of hip-hop’s most recognizable names in a hospital bed. Offset, the 34-year-old rapper whose legal name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, was shot in the valet area outside the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood after 7 p.m. local time. He was transported to a nearby hospital and is being closely monitored in stable condition, according to a representative speaking on his behalf.
Law enforcement confirmed that the injuries sustained were non-life-threatening and that two people were detained in connection with the incident. One of those individuals, rapper Lil Tjay, whose legal name is Tione Jayden Merritt, was charged with disorderly conduct. Authorities stated that the investigation remained active and that efforts were underway to identify one or more additional people believed to be involved.
A career built on cultural impact
Offset rose to prominence as a member of Migos, the Atlanta-based hip-hop trio that became one of the defining acts of their generation. The group first broke through in 2013 with a song that spread rapidly across social media, and followed it with a 2017 release that reached the top spot on one of music’s most competitive charts. Their influence on rap cadence, fashion and youth culture earned them recognition that extended well beyond their record sales.
In early 2022, the trio parted ways, with two of the members forming a separate duo while Offset launched a solo career. The split was followed by tragedy later that year when the third member of the group was fatally shot at a bowling alley in Houston, Texas, in November 2022. His death added a devastating chapter to a group that had already reshaped the sound of American rap.
A public life marked by milestones and turbulence
Beyond his music, Offset became a prominent figure in celebrity culture through his marriage to rapper and entertainer Cardi B in 2017. The two built a family together and had three children before separating and filing for divorce in 2024. Their relationship played out largely in public, amplifying his visibility far beyond the hip-hop world.
Monday’s shooting adds a painful dimension to a story that has already seen more than its share of hardship. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and police have not yet confirmed the identities or roles of those they are still seeking in connection with what happened outside the casino that night.
For now, Offset is recovering, and the hip-hop community that has watched this genre absorb one loss after another is watching closely, hoping this chapter ends differently than the last.
