Colts release Kenny Moore II ending a nine-year run in Indianapolis

After nine seasons, a Pro Bowl nod, and three Man of the Year nominations, Moore requested his exit over a scheme fit that was no longer working for either side.

Kenny Moore II spent nine years becoming one of the most trusted players in Indianapolis Colts history. On Thursday, that chapter closed the same way it had been heading for months, with Moore asking to leave and the organization honoring that request.

The Colts officially released Moore on Thursday after a trade request he submitted in early April produced no takers before or during the NFL Draft. With no deal available, Moore asked to be let go outright, giving him the opportunity to find a new team ahead of training camp. He will enter free agency at 30 years old, heading into what would have been the final year of a $30 million contract extension.

Why the relationship ended when it did

The split was not born out of conflict. General manager Chris Ballard addressed it plainly before the draft, saying Moore had simply told him it was time for a change and that the organization respected that. The mutual regard between player and franchise was evident in how the process was handled. The Colts could have kept Moore through the offseason and released him later. They did not.

The more substantive explanation for the split involves coverage scheme. Moore built his reputation as one of the NFL’s best slot cornerbacks by thriving in zone-heavy defenses. When Lou Anarumo joined the Colts as defensive coordinator ahead of the 2025 season, the coverage demands shifted significantly toward man-to-man. That adjustment created friction that statistics alone could not fully capture.

Moore played just 76% of Indianapolis’ defensive snaps in 2025, his lowest mark since his rookie year in 2017. In each season from 2018 through 2024, he had played at least 92% of the team’s defensive snaps. The decline in usage told the story of a player whose fit had changed even as his performance remained competitive.

What Moore produced in his final season and across nine years

The 2025 numbers were not the problem. Moore completed opposing quarterbacks just 62% of the time when targeted in coverage, which was the best mark of his career. He also finished with one interception returned 32 yards for a touchdown, six passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and 1.5 sacks across 14 games, starting seven of them.

Across nine seasons in Indianapolis, Moore appeared in 132 games and started 111 of them. He recorded 21 interceptions, including four returned for touchdowns, along with 68 passes defensed and 649 tackles. His 2021 Pro Bowl selection came during a stretch when he was widely regarded as the best slot cornerback in the league.

His release frees up $7.06 million in additional cap space for the Colts, who will carry $6.05 million in dead money tied to the contract. Justin Walley, a 2025 third-round pick who missed his entire rookie season after tearing his ACL in a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens, is expected to step into the starting slot role. Sauce Gardner and Charvarius Ward Sr. will start at the outside cornerback positions flanking him.

What Moore meant beyond the field

Moore went undrafted out of Valdosta State in 2017, a Division II program. The New England Patriots signed him and then waived him before the regular season. The Colts claimed him off waivers, and what followed was one of the more complete careers that an undrafted player has built at his position in the modern NFL.

He was the team’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee three times, reflecting consistent philanthropic investment in the Indianapolis community. He also volunteered as a teacher at Cardinal Ritter High School during his time with the team. When Ballard said the city felt the same way about Moore that the organization did, it was not a diplomatic formality. It was accurate.

Moore is now a free agent. The Colts move forward without him for the first time since his rookie year.
