Williams wants Sainz to stay but sets 2028 as race-win target date

Williams team principal James Vowles has made clear his determination to keep Carlos Sainz at the team beyond his current contract, which expires at the end of this season, acknowledging that the timeline to give the Spaniard what he needs, a genuinely competitive car, extends to 2028 at the earliest for race wins and 2030 for championship contention.

Sainz joined Williams ahead of the 2025 season after Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari left him without a seat at the team he had helped achieve significant success. His debut campaign produced two podium finishes and genuine optimism that Williams could compete at the front of the midfield. The 2026 season has been a step back, with the team missing the first preseason test and carrying an overweight car through the opening nine rounds, its best result a single-digit finishing position.

What Vowles wants and why Sainz matters

Vowles was unambiguous about his desire to retain both Sainz and teammate Alex Albon, describing them as the two drivers he wants in the car without further debate on the subject. His reasoning for specifically pursuing Sainz reflects a view about what a driver with genuine winning experience contributes to an organization trying to close the gap to the front of the field.

His argument is that a team working hard without knowing what elite performance actually looks like can continuously improve without ever making the leap to a different standard. A driver who has won races and worked at the top of the sport carries an understanding of what needs to be different, not just incrementally better. That knowledge, in his framing, functions as a catalyst for the team’s own development rather than simply a faster lap time at the weekend.

The timeline Vowles has offered is honest to the point of being unusual in the language of Formula 1 team principals. He said Williams will be in a position to win races by 2028 and to compete for the championship by 2030. The question implicit in that offer is whether Sainz, who has won four times in Formula 1 and is currently without a contract, can accept a multi-year commitment to a project that will not reach its competitive peak until his mid-thirties.

A planned upgrade and the current situation

Williams has not been without its own solutions in mind for 2026. Vowles confirmed that the team intends to introduce a significant new chassis at the Azerbaijan race in September, a moment the team hopes will represent a meaningful performance step from the current package that has been hampered primarily by weight throughout the season.

The broader context for Williams’s struggle is the performance gap that has emerged in the first year of new technical regulations, which many in the sport hoped would compress the field. Instead, the four largest and best-resourced teams have extended their advantage, leaving the teams behind them further back than before. Vowles suggested the sport itself may need to examine the structural and financial conditions that allow such a gap to persist, framing it as a sporting interest question rather than simply a Williams complaint.

What has kept Vowles motivated

Vowles joined Williams in 2023 with a mandate to transform a historic team that had fallen well short of its former status as one of the sport’s great powers. He said he has no regrets about taking the role and described the scale of the challenge as energizing rather than discouraging, even as the depth of what needed to be changed has repeatedly surprised him.

Williams won nine constructors’ championships during the team’s most successful era and remains one of the most recognized names in the history of the sport. Returning it to that level is the explicit goal, and Vowles wants the drivers who are currently navigating the difficult years to still be there when the competitive situation improves. Whether Sainz ultimately shares that patience will define one of the more significant driver market storylines of the next few weeks.
