FIFA opens probe into the brawl that ended the World Cup final

FIFA has opened a formal disciplinary investigation into the chaotic scenes that unfolded at the final whistle of Sunday’s World Cup final, after footage emerged of several Argentina players and at least one member of the coaching staff physically confronting Spanish players on the MetLife Stadium pitch.

Spain had just claimed a 1-0 victory in extra time, with Ferran Torres’s goal in the 106th minute securing the title. But the final moments of the match and the immediate aftermath were overshadowed by a series of incidents that are now drawing scrutiny from football’s governing body.

Footage circulating after the match showed Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes and defender Nahuel Molina appearing to strike Spanish players Eric García and Rodri. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also seen in video making apparent contact with Dani Olmo. Molina was further involved in a confrontation with Rodri, who then became the subject of a verbal altercation from his former club teammate Nicolás Otamendi. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and other players moved in to help calm the situation, though not before the scenes had already caused significant damage to the image of the occasion.

FIFA appoints a prosecutor

FIFA confirmed it has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential violations of its Disciplinary Code in connection with the post-match incidents. The appointment followed a review of official match reports from the final. FIFA said further details will be communicated once the prosecutor’s report has been completed, meaning sanctions, if any, are still weeks away.

The process follows standard procedure within the FIFA framework for incidents that occur on or around the field of play but are not dealt with by the referee during the match. The FIFA Disciplinary Committee can impose suspensions, fines and other measures against players, coaches and officials found to have violated the code.

A final already marked by indiscipline

The post-match trouble was not the only disciplinary blemish on the evening. Enzo Fernández, the Chelsea midfielder, had been sent off during the match itself for a foul on Spain defender Pau Cubarsí during stoppage time. The dismissal left Argentina to play the entirety of extra time with 10 men, a reduction that made Spain’s eventual winner feel almost inevitable.

Fernández’s red card placed him in a piece of unwanted history. He became the first player to receive a red card in a World Cup final since John Heitinga was dismissed while representing the Netherlands in the 2010 final against Spain in Johannesburg. That the same opposition were involved 16 years later added an unusual symmetry to the statistic.

What happens next

The investigation’s scope will determine how wide the FIFA inquiry casts its net. The post-match footage is unambiguous in showing physical contact, but the precise nature of the incidents and the intent of those involved will be assessed through the formal process. Players and officials who participated in the scenes can be called to provide their accounts as part of the inquiry.

Paredes, Molina and Ayala are among those most likely to face consequences given what the footage appears to show. The extent of any sanctions will depend on what the prosecutor determines and what recommendations are presented to the Disciplinary Committee.

Argentina’s participation in the 2026 World Cup is now over, but FIFA disciplinary proceedings are not bound by tournament timelines. Any suspensions issued could carry into future international competitions, affecting the careers of players involved during qualifying campaigns or subsequent tournaments.

The final itself will be remembered for Torres’s decisive strike and Spain’s championship. But the conduct of some of the defeated team’s members in the moments that followed has left a complicated postscript on what should have been an uncomplicated celebration for the game.
