Devonte Wyatt seals a deal that proves the Packers trust his future

The Packers and Wyatt, their starting defensive tackle, agreed to a three-year, $57 million contract extension on Monday, locking up one of the team’s most disruptive interior defenders through the 2029 season.

The deal includes a $20 million signing bonus and replaces the fifth-year rookie option that had Devonte Wyatt scheduled to earn $12.94 million in 2026. It is the latest in a series of extensions the Packers have executed this offseason as the organization works to retain the core of a young roster they believe is built to compete for years.

Green Bay had already extended receivers Jayden Reed and Christian Watson earlier this offseason, and reached a one-year, $8.8 million agreement with linebacker Isaiah McDuffie less than a week before Monday’s announcement. Tight end Tucker Kraft is understood to be the next player the team plans to focus on for a long-term deal.

Betting on a player coming off injury

The timing of the extension drew attention. Wyatt played only 10 games last season before suffering a broken fibula and torn ankle ligaments in the Packers’ Thanksgiving victory over the Detroit Lions. He did not participate in any on-field work during the offseason program this year as he continued to recover.

Despite those concerns, Green Bay chose to invest in him anyway, and the reasoning was not hard to understand. In those 10 games before the injury, he posted four sacks and seven quarterback hits. Over the past three seasons he has produced 14.5 sacks in 41 games, the kind of output from an interior lineman that very few players in the league can match. Across his four-year career with the franchise he has accumulated 16 sacks and 30 quarterback hits.

Green Bay selected the defensive tackle with the 28th pick in the 2022 draft. After a slow start in his first year, he developed steadily and became one of the most disruptive defensive tackles in the conference. Green Bay’s general manager spoke about Wyatt earlier this offseason, describing the team’s confidence in his impact on both the run game and as a pass rusher while also acknowledging that availability has been a concern and that staying healthy going forward will be essential.

A scheme change adds another dimension

Wyatt’s extension also comes with an important context shift. The Packers hired Jonathan Gannon as their defensive coordinator this offseason and are transitioning from the 4-3 defensive front that Wyatt has played in throughout his career to a 3-4 alignment. The scheme change places different demands on interior linemen and will require him to adapt his game to a new structural role.

The expectation within the organization is that Wyatt will be a central figure in how Gannon builds and operates that defense. His combination of size, quickness and pass-rush ability makes him well suited to anchor a 3-4 front, though proving that fit will require a full season of health that last year did not allow him to demonstrate.

The 28-year-old spoke about the injury and his recovery with a clear-eyed confidence following last season. He described the setback not as a defining moment but as one that he expected to use as fuel, expressing belief that the best of his career remains ahead rather than behind.

Packers building from the inside out

The wave of extensions Green Bay has executed this offseason reflects a deliberate organizational approach. Rather than allowing young contributors to reach free agency and test the open market, the front office has been proactive about securing the players it views as long-term building blocks at prices that still carry value relative to what those players might command as unrestricted free agents.

Wyatt’s deal fits that pattern. The investment carries injury risk and requires faith in a recovery that has not yet been tested in game conditions. But for a Packers team that views its defensive line as a foundation of what it is building under new coordinators, keeping Wyatt in the fold was worth accepting that uncertainty.
