LeBron James picks the 76ers and the NBA world is still processing it

LeBron James is a Philadelphia 76er. The announcement that many in the basketball world considered improbable, if not impossible just weeks ago, became official on Monday when the 76ers confirmed a two-year deal with the NBA’s career scoring leader on the veteran’s minimum, totaling $8 million.

The franchise marked the moment with a photograph. A blue No. 23 jersey hanging in a locker, a crown resting on the shelf above it, a nod to the nickname James has carried throughout his career. The image needed no caption.

LeBron, who turns 42 in December, came remarkably close to not being here at all. He acknowledged in his announcement Friday that he had strongly considered retirement after his 23rd season with the Lakers ended. He described having felt done. Then he reversed course, choosing a Sixers team built around three All-Star starters in Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown that has not won a championship since 1983 and has not advanced past the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs since 2001.

Why Philadelphia

LeBron said he believes he can help turn the Sixers into a championship team, and framed the signing as one final attempt to energize a new fan base and embark on a journey he described as incredible. LeBron was posting gym videos to social media at four in the morning on Monday, signaling that whatever peace he had made with potentially stepping away lasted only briefly.

The Sixers present a different kind of challenge than the ones James has taken on before. The roster has undeniable talent. Embiid is one of the most skilled big men in the game when healthy. Maxey has become one of the Eastern Conference’s most dangerous offensive players. The addition of Brown in the offseason gave the team another elite wing. The piece they lacked was the kind of player who has won everywhere he has been and who understands what separates teams that have every ingredient from teams that actually convert them into titles.

The 76ers went 45-37 last season before being swept in the second round by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks. The gap between good and great has been the defining frustration of this franchise for years.

The résumé

LeBron arrives with numbers that stretch the imagination. He is a 22-time All-Star, has been named to the All-NBA team 21 times, won four MVP awards and four Finals MVP awards, and is a member of the league’s 75th anniversary team. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in his final Lakers season. Over a career spanning more than 1,600 games, he has averaged 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists.

LeBron is also the first player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP with three different franchises, having won titles in Miami, Cleveland and Los Angeles before now chasing a fourth in Philadelphia.

The 2016 Cleveland championship, which ended a 56-year drought for the city, remains the most resonant proof of what LeBron can do in a place that has waited a long time. Philadelphia has been waiting since 1983.

A reunion built on decades of history

The team president who orchestrated the signing has known James since both were teenagers in Ohio. Mike Gansey, hired by the 76ers in late May after Daryl Morey was fired, was a high school basketball standout who finished second in Ohio’s Mr. Basketball voting in 2001 to a player at a different school who won the award three consecutive times. That player was LeBron James.

Gansey later joined the Cleveland Cavaliers organization in 2011 and had served as their general manager since 2022. He described James as someone whose impact he had witnessed firsthand at every stage of a career that has now produced four championships, four MVP awards and more points than any player in league history.

For LeBron, Philadelphia is the final stop on a journey that almost ended before it reached the city. He has one more title to chase, and he chose to chase it in the building where the Declaration of Independence was signed.
