Terrion Arnold signs with Seattle after visiting four teams in search of a home

Terrion Arnold plans to sign a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks, sources told  NFL Network on Thursday, ending a free agent search that took the cornerback to four teams before Seattle emerged as his choice.

He worked out for the Seahawks on Sunday and had previously visited the Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints and New York Giants. He chose Seattle after head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed the team’s interest earlier in the week and after his workout was featured in the second episode of Hard Knocks, which also showed general manager John Schneider weighing the potential implications of signing a player with an active legal case.

He pleaded not guilty to eight felony charges arising from a February incident in Tampa, Florida. Prosecutors allege he orchestrated the kidnapping and beating of three men whom he wrongly suspected of stealing cash, luxury watches and bags from him. The charges include four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery, which carry a potential sentence of life in prison. He has denied the allegations through his representatives. No trial date has been set. His next scheduled court appearance is a disposition hearing on Oct. 5.

His availability and the commissioner’s exempt list

It is not clear when Arnold will be available to play for Seattle. The NFL is expected to investigate his case, and the league could place him on the commissioner’s exempt list, which would bar him from playing or practicing while the investigation is ongoing. Players on the exempt list are still allowed to attend team meetings and continue to receive their salary.

Macdonald acknowledged earlier in the week that anything is on the table in terms of Arnold’s availability and that the team understood the uncertainty when they decided to pursue him.

The Seahawks’ cornerback situation

He projects to compete for the No. 3 cornerback spot behind Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe when and if he is cleared to participate. The team lost Riq Woolen to free agency and currently has Noah Igbinoghene and Nehemiah Pritchett competing for that third spot. Third-round rookie Julian Neal was also expected to factor into the competition but has been sidelined since early in training camp with an undisclosed injury.

His addition, assuming he is available to practice and play, addresses a depth concern that has been apparent throughout Seattle’s training camp. His talent level as a first-round pick in the 2024 draft is not in question. Whether he can play, and when, is the central uncertainty.

The connections to Seattle

The Seahawks had interest in Arnold before the 2024 draft, when Detroit selected him 24th overall. Defensive backs coach Karl Scott had recruited Arnold to Alabama before leaving the school ahead of his freshman season, creating an existing relationship the team could draw on. Quarterback Jalen Milroe, Arnold’s college teammate, vouched for him to Schneider, as shown in the Hard Knocks clip.

His NFL record

He played only eight games in his rookie season because of a shoulder injury that required surgery. In 24 career games with Detroit, he recorded one interception and 18 passes defensed. His physical profile as a 23-year-old first-round pick is the reason four teams considered signing him and why Seattle ultimately did.

The legal uncertainty makes this a high-risk acquisition. The Seahawks are betting that Arnold’s talent is worth the reputational and practical risks attached to a player facing charges this serious, a calculation that Schneider was shown working through on national television.
