Christian Gonzalez and the New England Patriots agreed to a four-year, $135 million Patriots extension Monday night, making the 24-year-old the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, with $102 million guaranteed.
The deal surpasses the four-year, $132 million extension Devon Witherspoon received from the Seattle Seahawks last month, which had included more than $101 million guaranteed. Both Gonzalez and Witherspoon share the same agent.
The agreement was reached less than 48 hours before Wednesday’s regular-season opener, a Super Bowl LX rematch between the Patriots and the Seahawks in Seattle. Gonzalez posted a brief message of gratitude on Instagram after the deal was announced.
The negotiation
He had been eligible for an extension for the first time this offseason. The situation had lingered for months. He did not attend the majority of New England’s voluntary offseason program, and in mandatory minicamp he participated only in low-tempo walkthrough drills, a common signal from players seeking new contracts.
He expressed frustration in late August that it remained unresolved, but talks intensified Monday night before the agreement was reached.
Owner Robert Kraft said at the start of training camp that the team had offered Gonzalez a deal that would make him the NFL‘s highest-paid cornerback. Gonzalez later said there are different ways to measure that. Under his prior contract, he was scheduled to earn $2.259 million in 2026 and $18.11 million in 2027, with the franchise tag as a potential 2028 option.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and executive vice president Eliot Wolf both said multiple times throughout the offseason that they hoped to retain him. In the lead-up to the deal, Vrabel and Gonzalez had been working together on expanding his leadership role within the Patriots.
His injury history and 2026 status
He suffered a lower leg injury on Aug. 10 during a one-on-one drill with receiver A.J. Brown but returned to practice Aug. 24 and made the trip to Seattle for Wednesday’s opener.
He missed the final 13 games of his rookie season in 2023 due to a dislocated right shoulder and torn labrum. He returned in 2024 to start the first 16 games before missing the regular-season finale with a concussion. In 2025 he missed the first three games recovering from a training camp hamstring injury.
In 34 regular-season starts, Gonzalez has four career interceptions. He has started all four of his postseason games.
His best moments on the biggest stages
He delivered some of his best performances in the highest-stakes games. He recorded an interception late in the AFC Championship win over the Denver Broncos and had four tackles and three passes defended in the Super Bowl LX loss to Seattle.
The No. 17 pick in the 2023 draft, he has been selected to the All-Pro team and the Pro Bowl. He and veteran Carlton Davis III are the Patriots’ two outside starting cornerbacks, with Marcus Jones the top slot option.
