Suns sign Duop Reath the shoulder surgery and the depth question it answers

The Phoenix Suns are signing center Duop Reath to provide frontcourt depth while Mark Williams recovers from shoulder surgery expected to sideline him for several months, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.

Reath, 30, spent three seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers before being traded to Atlanta in February and subsequently waived. Portland signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2023 and converted him to a standard NBA deal midway through a breakout rookie season in which he averaged 9.1 points and 3.7 rebounds. His minutes declined over the following two seasons.

Phoenix’s frontcourt also includes Khaman Maluach, selected by the Suns with the No. 10 pick in last year’s NBA draft.

The Williams injury and what it means

Williams, a 23-year-old center, was acquired by Phoenix in the offseason to anchor the middle. His absence for several months creates an immediate gap in a Suns roster still trying to establish its identity heading into the season. A shoulder injury at this stage of roster construction is a significant setback, as centers with his combination of size, mobility and shot-blocking are not easy to replace at depth.

Reath gives the Suns a proven NBA body with experience at the position. He is not a high-usage offensive player, but his 9.1-point rookie season showed he can contribute in a rotation role when given consistent minutes. The question over his time in Portland was never ability but opportunity, and his minutes declined in each of his two seasons after that breakout year as the Blazers changed direction and the team’s needs shifted.

Reath’s path to Phoenix

Reath’s NBA journey reflects the kind of persistence that defines players who stick around without ever being lottery-selected. Going undrafted in 2023, he signed with Portland, made the most of his early minutes and earned a standard contract, which represents a meaningful threshold in a league where two-way deals and G League assignments dominate the lower end of rosters.

The trade to Atlanta in February moved him out of a rebuilding situation in Portland into another transition, and the subsequent waiver left him available. Phoenix’s need opened a door he is now walking through.

At 30, Reath is an experienced NBA player who understands his role and the level of the competition. He will not be asked to be a star. He will be asked to show up ready, play within the system and hold the fort at center while Williams works through his recovery.

The frontcourt picture

Phoenix’s frontcourt situation is now essentially three players. Williams is the long-term answer when healthy. Maluach is the high-ceiling young piece the team is building around. And Reath is the veteran bridge who can log real minutes without incident while the other two develop or recover.

Maluach was the No. 10 pick for a reason. The Suns believe he is a foundational piece, but a 19-year-old center in his first NBA season is not ready to carry the load Williams’s absence creates. Reath’s experience protects Maluach from being over-leveraged before he is ready.

The broader Suns context

Phoenix has spent the last several years trying to rebuild around a core that has never fully cohered. Williams was meant to be part of a fresh direction. His injury does not end that project, but it does test the depth of the roster before the season has even begun.

Reath is a practical, low-cost answer to a short-term problem. Whether he remains on the roster once Williams returns will depend on how the season develops and whether the Suns find themselves needing his specific skill set down the road.
