Jayden Daniels and a third goal gone wrong

Quinn said he expects Jayden Daniels back at some point this season and that nothing he had seen gave him reason to think otherwise. Without the follow up results, that expectation is a read rather than a diagnosis.

How did it happen?

On third and goal from the 1 yard line on the final play of the first half, Jayden Daniels appeared to have his feet stepped on by his own left guard as he took the snap. He began to fall, tried to brace himself with his left hand and the elbow bent backward. Medical staff came out after the center waved for them. Teammates and coaches surrounded him, and he was carted off sitting up with a towel over his head.

Has this happened before?

Yes, to the same elbow. Jayden Daniels dislocated it in Week 9 last season against Seattle, returned four weeks later and then reinjured it in Week 14 at Minnesota while attempting a tackle after an interception. He did not play again that year. The recurrence is what separates this from a routine injury scare, because repeated dislocations in one joint can point to structural laxity that rest alone does not resolve.

How did the team respond?

Badly, in the immediate sense. Players described a subdued locker room and a reluctance to leave the field. One receiver said the moment took the air out of the group. A running back and longtime friend said he could not stop the tears. Backup Marcus Mariota, the first player to reach him, spoke afterward about the instinct to think about the person rather than the position.

Was the play call second guessed?

Quinn said he did not regret going for it rather than kicking, explaining the aggression as a response to the offensive firepower Dallas carried. His players did not engage with that question at all. Their attention stayed on the injury.

What had Jayden Daniels done in the game?

Enough to matter. He completed 11 of 17 passes for 96 yards and added 69 yards on seven carries, the dual threat profile that made him Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2024. He threw a touchdown to Stefon Diggs to cut a 17 to 3 deficit and was leading the drive that ended with the injury.

Who starts now?

Mariota, until Jayden Daniels is cleared. He finished Sunday with 11 completions on 16 attempts for 111 yards and a touchdown. Teammates expressed public confidence in him while acknowledging the standard around him has to rise. His own message was that nobody needs to overextend or play hero.

What comes next?

Monday’s imaging. Washington sits early enough in the season to absorb a multiweek absence, and the stated expectation inside the building is a return. The harder question is not whether Jayden Daniels plays again this year but whether an elbow injured three times in under a year holds up across a full one. His value is built on mobility, and mobility is what keeps putting him in these positions.
