Davis Cup Final 8 and the road to Bologna

The Czech Republic eliminated the United States in Prague on Saturday, advancing to the Davis Cup Final 8 after both American singles players lost on the deciding day of the tie.

How did the United States lose?

Jakub Mensik beat Ben Shelton 5 to 7, 6 to 4, 6 to 3 to level the best of five series at two apiece, setting up a deciding singles rubber. Jiri Lehecka then closed it out against Learner Tien 6 to 3, 7 to 5 in front of a home crowd that had spent the afternoon building toward it. The result marked a second consecutive loss for Shelton, who had fallen to Lehecka a day earlier in his first match since reaching the US Open final.

Did the Americans have a chance?

They did, briefly. Christian Harrison and Austin Krajicek won the doubles 5 to 7, 6 to 3, 7 to 6 in a tiebreak that went to eight points, putting the United States ahead 2 to 1 and leaving the tie one singles win from a berth in the Davis Cup Final 8. Both remaining matches went the other way.

Who else has qualified?

Austria advanced in Vienna, where Jurij Rodionov beat Zizou Bergs 7 to 6, 6 to 3 to build an insurmountable 3 to 1 lead over Belgium on outdoor clay. South Korea also progressed, and did so with historical weight attached. It became the first Asian nation to reach the Davis Cup Final 8, clinching against India 3 to 1 after SoonWoo Kwon defeated Sumit Nagal 6 to 1, 6 to 2 in the first reverse singles. The Koreans had come from a set down in both singles matches on Friday to take control of the tie.

What is still undecided?

Britain leads Ecuador 2 to 0 at home after singles wins from Toby Samuel and Arthur Fery. Germany and Croatia are level at 1 to 1 in Halle, where Alexander Zverev beat Matej Dodig 6 to 4, 7 to 6 before Dino Prizmic answered with a straight sets win over Daniel Altmaier. Doubles and reverse singles in the remaining ties are scheduled for Sunday, which will complete the Davis Cup Final 8 field.

How did Zverev look?

Sharp. The second ranked German struck 15 aces on the indoor hardcourt and never faced a break point. It was his first match since winning the US Open final against Shelton last weekend, a title that followed his breakthrough at the French Open in June. At 29, he is playing the best tennis of his career on a schedule that has given him almost no recovery time.

What is the Final 8 format?

Introduced in 2022, it condenses the competition’s closing stage into a single venue rather than spreading knockout ties across host nations. The eight surviving teams meet in Bologna, Italy, in November. The structure has drawn criticism for reducing home advantage, which has historically been the competition’s defining feature, though it has made the endgame easier to follow.

What does the American exit mean?

Depth was not the problem. The United States arrived with a top five singles player and a capable doubles pairing and still lost on the road, which is the recurring difficulty in this format. Shelton played two matches within a week of a Grand Slam final and lost both, a workload question the American program will revisit before the next cycle.
