Chris Brown told the world this week that he is done being nice. In a string of Instagram Stories on Tuesday, the 37-year-old singer said he hates the music industry, does not like most celebrities, does not want anyone’s approval and is ready to be the villain. He also called himself the king and claimed no artist alive can touch him, even on his worst day.
The timing makes the rant more revealing. Two days later, a Los Angeles judge signaled he would cut the $12.9 million a jury awarded to a housekeeper mauled by Brown’s dog, lowering it to about $8 million. In that same case, Brown told jurors he left the scene of the attack because he worried about his image. This week, he said he no longer cares what anyone thinks of him.
Why did Chris Brown go off on Instagram?
He did not say exactly. The posts followed two public clashes. On Sept. 12, U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett and Texas state Rep. Venton Jones honored Brown and Usher at an R&B Tour stop at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Crockett entered a recognition of their artistry into the Congressional Record. Backlash followed, and Jones apologized to Black women, to women broadly and to survivors of domestic violence, pointing to Brown’s past.
Brown fired back, saying he never asked for the honor, that his Dallas shows were already sold out, and that lawmakers should leave him alone and let him focus on his fans. Hours before Tuesday’s rant, he also clashed online with journalist David Dennis Jr., who criticized fans for still supporting him and made claims about his behavior. Brown challenged him to show any charges or convictions from the past 17 years.

What is happening with the Chris Brown dog attack lawsuit?
A judge is poised to shrink the award. At a hearing Thursday, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Huey P. Cotton said he was inclined to cut the $12.9 million verdict by nearly 40%, more than $5 million, Rolling Stone reported. The housekeeper, Maria Avila, can accept the lower amount or ask for a new trial.
Her lawyer, Nancy Doumanian, argued that the injuries are permanent. She pointed to a surgeon’s testimony that damage to a nerve in Avila’s arm limits her ability to grip, write, dress and clean. She asked the judge to reduce the award only to $11 million. He did not budge, and he asked her to propose how the cut should be divided.
What happened to Chris Brown’s housekeeper?
On Dec. 12, 2020, Avila stepped outside Brown’s home in Tarzana to empty a vacuum bag. His large Caucasian Shepherd, named Hades, attacked her. She suffered severe injuries to her face and arm, needed skin grafts and dozens of stitches, and later developed PTSD. Because of pandemic rules, she spent five days in the hospital alone.
At trial in June, Brown testified that he locked up the dog and checked that Avila was breathing, but that he did not personally call 911 because he feared a recording would leak. He said he left before paramedics arrived on his manager’s advice. Before trial, Brown admitted negligence under California’s dog bite law, but he disputed the extent of her injuries. His lawyers later argued the award was excessive and that jurors should not have heard about his 2009 felony conviction for assaulting Rihanna.
