Pittsburgh agreed on Wednesday night to trade cornerback Joey Porter Jr to Dallas for a 2027 sixth round pick and a 2028 second rounder, ending a contract standoff that ran through the offseason and into the season.
What was the dispute about?
Guaranteed money within the contract structure, according to reporting. The two sides never made meaningful progress despite talks continuing until hours before the Week 1 game, at which point Pittsburgh stopped negotiating under a longstanding policy against in season contract talks.
What is his injury situation?
Unresolved, and this is the complication Dallas is accepting. He reported an aggravation of a back problem on the first day of training camp, sat out camp and preseason, and was placed on the physically unable to perform list until late August. He was a limited participant in every regular season practice until this week, with the team describing a ramp up phase. He was inactive for all three games and was ruled out of Thursday’s game earlier Wednesday, with a back injury added to the practice report alongside the conditioning designation used for most of the past three weeks.
Why would Dallas take that on?
Because its pass defence has been among the league’s worst. Through three games it ranks 31st in opponent quarterback rating and 31st in opponent completion percentage, with no interceptions. Injuries have compounded it, with one corner missing a second game through a hamstring strain and his replacement injuring a knee and ankle last weekend. The team finished that game with two backups and a practice squad call up in the slot.
What is Dallas giving up?
A second and a sixth, with the second not arriving until 2028. For a 2023 second round pick who has started 41 games with three interceptions in three seasons, that is close to replacement value if he plays. The Joey Porter Jr trade is a bet that the back issue resolves, and the price reflects that it might not.
What does Pittsburgh get out of it?
Resolution. A player who did not want to play on his current terms, who had not been available, and whose situation was not going to improve during a season in which the team refuses to negotiate. Converting that into two picks is a reasonable outcome from a position of limited leverage.
Who plays now in Pittsburgh?
A three man rotation at outside corner of Asante Samuel Jr, Jamel Dean and Daylen Everette. Everette, a third round pick this year, took extended snaps in the Week 3 win over Cincinnati, entering first for a briefly injured Dean and then replacing Samuel for much of the second half. That usage suggests the staff was already comfortable without Porter.
Is there a pattern between these teams?
Three trades in two years. Dallas sent picks to Pittsburgh for receiver George Pickens in May 2025 and acquired tackle Broderick Jones in August. Front offices that trade with each other repeatedly tend to keep doing so, because the relationship removes friction from a process that is otherwise slow.
What should be watched?
Whether he practises fully. The Joey Porter Jr trade only works for Dallas if a player who has not been available since July becomes available quickly, and the first full participation report is the signal.
