One of the most successful coaching minds in tennis has a new star to guide. The coach who helped turn a Spanish teenager into a champion is now taking on an American star with big ambitions.

Juan Carlos Ferrero, who coached Carlos Alcaraz to his first six major titles, is joining Ben Shelton’s coaching staff for the 2027 season, Shelton announced Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026.

What did Ben Shelton say about Ferrero?

Shelton, 24, called Ferrero a huge addition to his team in a social media post and said he was excited to get started and put in the work this offseason. He made the announcement as players prepare for the final weeks of the season and the start of the offseason.

Ferrero said Shelton has extraordinary talent, power and character, and that he was very happy to join the team for what he called an exciting new chapter. Ferrero is known for his calm demeanor and attention to detail.

Ferrero will work alongside Bryan Shelton, Ben Shelton’s father, who has guided his son’s career. Father and son have worked closely together since Ben turned professional.

Who is Juan Carlos Ferrero?

Ferrero is a former world No. 1 who won the French Open in 2003. After retiring, he became one of the sport’s most respected coaches. He reached the top ranking in 2003, the same year he won his only major title, and was known for his speed and baseline game.

He began working with Alcaraz when the Spaniard was a teenager and helped him become the youngest man to reach No. 1, at 19, after winning the 2022 U.S. Open. Ferrero ran a tennis academy in Spain where Alcaraz trained during his rise.

Together they won six majors over seven years before the partnership ended last December. Alcaraz has since continued with his longtime assistant coach. Their split surprised many in the tennis world, given their long run of success.

How did Ben Shelton’s 2026 season go?

Ben Shelton, now ranked No. 4 in the world, won four titles this year, the most of his career. It was a breakthrough season that established him among the sport’s elite.

He reached his first Grand Slam final at the U.S. Open in September, losing to Alexander Zverev, who rose to No. 1 this week. He had previously reached the U.S. Open semifinals in 2023.

The lefty is known for one of the fastest serves in the game and an energetic style that has made him a fan favorite. His personality and celebrations have helped attract younger fans to the sport.

Why is the hire significant?

Adding Ferrero gives Ben Shelton a coach with deep experience helping a young player win the biggest titles.

Ferrero’s work with Alcaraz focused on building a complete game that could win on every surface. Shelton has strong weapons but is still developing parts of his game as he chases his first major title. Experts often point to his return of serve and consistency from the baseline as areas for growth.

The move also sets up an intriguing storyline, as Shelton could face Alcaraz, Ferrero’s former pupil, in big matches next season. Alcaraz and Sinner have won most of the recent majors, so Shelton will need every edge he can find.

What is Bryan Shelton’s role?

Bryan Shelton, a former ATP player, coached the University of Florida men’s team to a national championship before leaving to work with his son full time.

Ben Shelton won the NCAA singles title at Florida in 2022 before turning professional.

With Ferrero joining his father, Ben Shelton will enter 2027 with one of the most experienced coaching teams on tour.
