The king of clay is trading the tennis court for the boardroom of his favorite soccer club. One of the greatest athletes in Spanish history is taking on a new role with the club he has cheered for all his life.

Rafael Nadal confirmed on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026, that he has accepted an offer to join the board of directors of Real Madrid, the Spanish soccer giant he has supported since childhood. The move gives one of sport’s most respected figures a formal voice in running one of the world’s most famous clubs.

What did Rafael Nadal say about joining Real Madrid?

Nadal posted a photo on Instagram of himself as a toddler wearing a Real Madrid uniform. He thanked club president Florentino Perez and the board for the invitation and said he accepted with great enthusiasm, eager to learn and contribute as much as he can.

Nadal, 40, has been an honorary member of the club since March 2017. Honorary members are recognized by the club for their ties to it but do not have a role in its management.

What did Real Madrid say about Nadal?

In a statement, the club said it was an immense honor for Real Madrid and its fans that a figure of Nadal’s stature would join the board and help shape the club’s present and future.

The club praised his talent, drive to improve, capacity for sacrifice, competitiveness, humility, respect for rivals and solidarity, calling him an example on and off the court. The statement described his sporting career as legendary.

Those values are part of the club’s identity, the statement said, adding that Nadal has become a role model for millions of people around the world.

When will the appointment become official?

The club’s General Assembly must ratify Nadal’s appointment at its meeting on Nov. 21. Once approved, he will join the group that oversees the club’s major decisions.

Real Madrid is owned by its members, known as socios, who elect the club’s leadership. The General Assembly is made up of representatives of those members. That structure sets the club apart from many European teams owned by investors or companies.

What did Nadal accomplish in tennis?

Nadal retired in 2024 with 22 Grand Slam titles, including a record 14 French Open championships. He also won 36 Masters titles and two Olympic gold medals. He played his final matches for Spain in the Davis Cup in late 2024.

His rivalries with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic defined an era of men’s tennis, and his dominance on clay earned him the nickname King of Clay. Many consider him the greatest player ever on clay.

He is set to return to the court for an exhibition, the MGM Slam in Las Vegas, in February 2027. The event will mark his first time playing in the United States since retiring.

Why is Real Madrid a natural fit for Nadal?

Nadal, who grew up on the island of Mallorca, has long been one of the club’s most famous fans and has often been seen at the club’s matches. He has celebrated the team’s victories publicly and attended major finals.

His family has deep soccer roots. His uncle Miguel Angel Nadal played for Barcelona, Real Madrid’s fiercest rival.

The appointment comes during an eventful season for the club, which recently beat Barcelona under coach Jose Mourinho. The club also continues to chase titles at home and in Europe.

For Nadal, the role offers a new way to compete at the highest level, this time from the boardroom. Fans will be watching to see how he brings his competitive spirit to the club’s leadership.
