NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 sends three Big Ten teams to the Elite Eight

Three teams, one conference, and a window that has not been open like this in a very long time.

Three Big Ten programs punched their tickets to the Elite Eight this weekend, and the path each one took says something different about how deep this conference runs in March. Purdue survived. Illinois dominated. Iowa shocked everyone who was not paying close enough attention.

The last time a Big Ten school won the NCAA men’s basketball national championship was in 2000. A generation of college basketball fans has grown up without seeing it happen. The way this bracket is setting up, that drought may be running out of time.

Purdue holds on when it matters most

No. 2 seed Purdue did not make it look easy against No. 11 Texas, but it made it look decisive when the game was on the line. With 11.9 seconds left and the score tied, Trey Kaufman-Renn converted a tip-in to give the Boilermakers a 79-77 win. It was the kind of play that defines tournament runs, not just because of the degree of difficulty but because Purdue has been here before and found a way to finish.

Braden Smith continues to be the best facilitator left in the tournament. The Boilermakers are past the point where anyone doubts them, and their offense has produced a different lead scorer in nearly every game.

Illinois grinds Houston down

No. 3 Illinois handled No. 2 Houston in a way that did not leave much room for debate. The Fighting Illini broke the game open in the second half, holding the Cougars scoreless for nearly seven minutes in a stretch that effectively ended Houston’s tournament. Illinois has not been in a close game yet, which is either a sign of dominance or a detail that will matter when the margin finally tightens.

Their work on the glass has been a consistent edge, and their shooting from the perimeter has held up under pressure. The European-heavy roster has given them a different kind of versatility, and so far, no one has found an answer for it.

Iowa makes history under a first-year coach

No. 9 Iowa’s 77-71 win over Nebraska was the quieter of the three Big Ten stories this weekend, but it may be the most remarkable. The Hawkeyes have not reached the Elite Eight since the 1980s. They got there this year under Ben McCollum, a coach who spent 17 seasons at the Division II level before taking the Iowa job.

The win over Nebraska also revealed something important about this team. Iowa no longer needs Bennett Stirtz to carry the offensive load for the Hawkeyes to win. That is a meaningful development for a team still alive in the second week of March.

What comes next for each team

Purdue and Illinois are on a collision course in the South regional final, which means the Big Ten is guaranteed at least one representative in the Final Four from that side of the bracket alone.

On the other side, No. 1 Michigan faces No. 4 Alabama, a matchup that pits the top scoring offense in the country against a Michigan defense anchored by Aday Mara. Yaxel Lendeborg will need to replicate his last performance for the Wolverines to advance.

No. 3 Michigan State drew No. 2 UConn, which is the toughest test left for any Big Ten team. Jeremy Fears Jr. and Coen Carr will have to match a deep and experienced UConn roster that has already eliminated strong competition this tournament.

Iowa faces a team it has already beaten this season, which gives the Hawkeyes a psychological edge heading into a game where they are expected to be the underdog on paper.

The bigger picture

The Big Ten entered the Sweet 16 with six teams. Three are still alive. The conference has already shown it can handle top competition, and with multiple realistic paths to the Final Four, the arithmetic is working in its favor. Whether the last piece falls into place is a different question entirely, and one that gets answered in the next few days.
