Chipotle is giving tattooed customers something to smile about this Friday. The chain is bringing back its buy-one-get-one promotion on March 13 from 3 to 4 p.m. local time at participating locations across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France and Germany. The catch is simple: show up with a tattoo.
The offer covers permanent ink, temporary tattoos and even drawn-on designs, with restaurant staff making the final call on what counts. Customers can redeem up to five free menu items per check, with each free item requiring the purchase of an entrée of equal or greater value.
How a meme became a marketing moment for Chipotle
The promotion did not come out of nowhere. It traces back to a viral moment in 2019, when a fan on social media compared Adam Levine’s heavily tattooed chest and arms during a performance to the dense, handwritten artwork that covers Chipotle’s paper to-go bags. The phrase ‘tatted like a Chipotle bag’ spread quickly from there, spawning years of jokes, imitations and even fans literally taping the brand’s bags to their arms for content.
Chipotle first turned that meme into a promotion in June 2025, running the same BOGO format for one hour. That event drove the company’s highest-ever sales during the 3 to 4 p.m. window, a period that typically sits outside the lunch and dinner rush.
The Friday the 13th timing adds another layer. Tattoo shops have a long tradition of releasing flash sheets on that date, offering pre-designed tattoos at reduced prices to mark the occasion. Chipotle borrowed that tradition for its one-hour window, framing the promotion as its own version of a flash event.
Swae Lee brings an exclusive to Miami
Chipotle partnered with hip-hop artist Swae Lee to add something extra to the day. The two co-created a limited-edition temporary tattoo flash sheet inspired by the bold, dense artwork found on the brand’s takeout bags. Swae Lee, who is from Miami, brought his own aesthetic to the designs.
The sheet is available exclusively at the Midtown Miami location at 3201 N. Miami Ave. on March 13 from 3 to 4 p.m. ET, one per transaction, while supplies last. Miami was chosen in part because of its reputation as one of the most tattooed cities in the country.
The collaboration also connects to Swae Lee’s current moment in music. His first solo single ‘FLAMMABLE’ was recently released ahead of his debut solo album Same Difference, due out April 3. The Chipotle partnership leans into a broader nostalgia wave that has taken over social media in 2026, with a significant portion of online content this year drawing on memories and cultural moments from 2016. Swae Lee’s connection to that era made him a natural fit for a campaign built around looking back.
What to know before you go
The BOGO is redeemable in-restaurant only and cannot be applied to online, mobile or delivery orders. Kids’ meals do not count as qualifying entrĂ©e purchases. The deal cannot be combined with other promotions or coupons, and Chipotle reserves the right to modify or end the offer at any time.
For customers who miss the one-hour window, there is no rain check. The promotion runs for exactly 60 minutes and does not carry over.
Chipotle has been leaning into limited-time giveaways throughout the year. The chain handed out free chips and queso at the end of February in honor of National Tortilla Chip Day, continuing a pattern of short-window promotions that reward customers who show up at the right time.
