March 14 is Pi Day, the annual celebration of the mathematical constant 3.14, and this year the food industry is taking the occasion seriously. Pizza chains, fast-food brands, and dessert shops have lined up a range of deals, many priced at exactly $3.14, for customers looking to mark the date with something other than a calculator.
What Pi Day actually is
Pi Day has been observed on March 14 since 1988, when physicist Larry Shaw started celebrations at the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco. Congress formally designated the date a national holiday in 2009, partly to encourage interest in math and science. The date also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday.
The number pi represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It begins at 3.14 and continues infinitely, with no repeating pattern. Using just nine digits, scientists can calculate the circumference of the Earth with a margin of error of roughly a quarter of an inch per 25,000 miles. NASA relies on it daily for calculating orbits, spacecraft communication, and planetary positioning.
