Virginia State Trojans flip the script on No. 1 Panthers

The Trojans' stunning rematch win over No. 1 Virginia Union flips the CIAA North and sets the stage for a dramatic Baltimore showdown

Nobody saw this kind of reversal coming — at least, not this fast. When the Virginia Union Panthers handed the Virginia State Trojans a devastating 28-point defeat back in January, most CIAA watchers were ready to hand the Panthers the Northern Division crown and call it a season. Virginia State had other plans.

On Saturday, February 21, inside a charged VSU Multipurpose Center in Petersburg, Virginia, the Trojans did what few believed possible. They took down the No. 1-ranked Virginia Union Panthers in the regular-season finale, flipping the narrative of an entire season in one electric afternoon. Virginia State closed out the regular season on a remarkable eight-game win streak to earn the right to call themselves kings of the CIAA North — at least until Baltimore comes calling.

Virginia State’s Relentless Surge

What makes Virginia State’s run so extraordinary is the context. After suffering that lopsided January loss, most programs fold. The Trojans, under head coach Lonnie Blow, did the opposite. They sharpened their defense, tightened their rotations, and got hot at exactly the right moment. Virginia State went on to sweep the CIAA North Division, earning the conference’s top men’s seed heading into the 2026 CIAA Tournament — defending their championship from a year ago, when they captured the crown with a convincing tournament run.

Key contributors fueled the streak. Jacob Cooper delivered consistent double-digit performances, Tim Uzochukwu brought toughness and rebounding presence, and William Hopkins provided a steady perimeter threat, shooting lights-out from three-point range during the Trojans’ surge. Virginia State entered the February 21 rematch playing their best basketball of the season, and they proved it on the biggest stage of the regular season.

Virginia Union’s Dangerous Identity

Make no mistake — Virginia Union is still a force to be reckoned with. The Panthers entered Saturday’s showdown boasting the CIAA’s top-ranked defense, a distinction that cannot be understated. Their January demolition of Virginia State was a masterclass in interior dominance and defensive suffocation, with Malachi Dark leading all scorers in that contest with 18 points while also delivering steals and rebounds. Virginia Union’s identity is built on grinding defense and controlling the paint, and for most of this season, nobody cracked that code.

But Virginia State found a way. The Trojans’ rematch performance signaled something bigger — a team locked in, battle-tested, and absolutely capable of running the table in Baltimore.

What This CIAA Rivalry Means for the HBCU Community

The Virginia Union-Virginia State rivalry is more than just basketball. It is a celebration of HBCU excellence, regional pride, and the kind of competition that the CIAA has built its legacy on. With the Trojans stepping into another high-stakes showdown, two institutions separated by just over 20 miles going head-to-head in a 1-versus-2 divisional battle, with the CIAA Tournament on the line — that is the kind of moment HBCU GO was built to broadcast, and the kind of game that reminds the country why HBCU sports deserve every bit of national attention they are getting. When the Trojans rise to the occasion, the intensity of this rivalry reaches another level entirely.

HBCU GO, Allen Media Group’s free-streaming platform, carried the full doubleheader, giving fans across the country access to every moment. Their broadcast team delivered expert coverage throughout the afternoon, making sure no detail of this rivalry classic went undocumented.

CIAA Tournament Awaits in Baltimore

With the regular season in the books, both Virginia State and Virginia Union are tournament-bound. The 2026 CIAA Basketball Tournament tips off Tuesday, February 24, running through Saturday, February 28, at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. All 22 games will stream live on ESPN+, with both championship contests also airing on ESPNU. The Trojans will look to carry their late-season surge into Baltimore as they prepare for another statement opportunity on a bigger stage.

Virginia State enters Baltimore as the Northern Division’s No. 1 men’s seed, riding a wave of momentum and the confidence that comes with having knocked off the division’s top dog when it mattered most. Virginia Union, still hungry and still dangerous, enters with the chip of Saturday’s loss firmly on their shoulder. The Trojans understand that postseason play resets everything, and every possession will matter from the opening tip.

How to Watch Virginia State’s Tournament Run

If Saturday’s rematch proved anything, it is that this CIAA North rivalry still has plenty of chapters left. Catch all the tournament action through HBCU GO at HBCUGO.tv, or download the HBCU GO app on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and mobile. Follow HBCU GO on social media for live scores, real-time updates, and the viral moments this tournament will undoubtedly deliver.

The Trojans have the momentum. The Panthers have the motivation. Baltimore is about to be must-watch television.
