Terrence Howard did not name the woman. But Farrah Franklin figured out quickly enough that he was talking about her, and she was not going to let the story sit uncorrected.
The actor, best known for his roles in Hustle and Flow and Empire, recently appeared on a podcast where he recalled a moment from his younger years involving Beyoncé and the members of Destiny’s Child. According to his account, he had the opportunity to pursue Beyoncé early in their acquaintance but instead gravitated toward another member of the group, whom he described as having blue eyes.
Franklin, who served as a member of Destiny’s Child for a brief period before departing, stepped forward to offer her account of what actually happened. She clarified that her eyes are naturally green rather than blue, confirmed that she and Howard had spent time together on a few occasions and drew a firm line around the nature of those interactions. They visited a recording studio together more than once. The outings, she said, were friendly. There was no romance involved.
What Howard actually said
Howard made the remarks during a podcast appearance earlier this month, when the conversation turned to famous couples in Hollywood and the host mentioned Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z. Howard used the moment to share what he described as a personal history with the group, suggesting that a young Beyoncé had been interested in him and that he had redirected his attention toward another member.
He went further, recalling a moment at the 2005 BET Awards when Destiny’s Child pulled three men from the audience to join them onstage for a live performance of their song Cater 2 U. Howard was one of those men, paired with Beyoncé, while Kelly Rowland performed alongside Nelly and Michelle Williams with Magic Johnson. Howard interpreted Beyoncé’s choice to select him as a pointed gesture, suggesting she had used the performance to show him what he had walked away from.
A brief but notable chapter in Destiny’s Child history
Franklin’s time with Destiny’s Child came after original members LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson departed the group. She and Michelle Williams joined Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland in what became a revised lineup, though Franklin’s tenure proved short. The group continued as a trio with Beyoncé, Rowland and Williams, eventually achieving their most commercially successful period before Beyoncé launched her solo career.
Since the group’s height, Beyoncé married Jay-Z in 2008 and the couple have three children together. Howard has been married four times and is the father of five children. Franklin has remained connected to the entertainment industry and indicated she has been developing new music and film projects.
Franklin moves on graciously
What stands out about Franklin’s response is its tone. She did not attack Howard’s credibility or engage with the more speculative elements of his story. She identified the factual inaccuracy about her eye color, confirmed the basic outline of their interactions and declined to say anything further about claims she could not verify. She closed with a note about her current work and a wish of goodwill for everyone involved.
It is the kind of response that corrects without escalating, which in a story with this many recognizable names attached to it, may have been the wisest move available to her. Howard’s account may have been told in the spirit of nostalgia. Franklin’s reply made clear that memory and reality do not always match up perfectly, even when the storyteller means well
