Running back AJ Dillon is getting another shot to reestablish himself in the NFL, this time with the Carolina Panthers. The former Philadelphia Eagles player has agreed to a one year deal, offering him a chance to step into a new system and compete for a larger role during the 2026 season.

The move marks an important turning point for Dillon, whose recent seasons have been shaped by injury setbacks and limited opportunities on the field. Now, with a new team and a clean slate, he will look to rediscover the form that once made him a dependable presence in the backfield.

A fresh start after injury challenges

Dillon’s path to Carolina has not been straightforward. After missing the entire 2024 season due to a neck injury, questions lingered about his durability and long-term outlook. His recovery allowed him to return the following year, but his role never fully stabilized.

When he joined the Eagles, expectations were modest but hopeful. The team saw him as a physical runner who could add depth and power to the offense. However, his time in Philadelphia did not unfold as planned.

Limited role with the Eagles

During his stint with the Eagles, Dillon struggled to secure consistent playing time. He appeared in seven regular-season games, but his impact remained minimal. He recorded just three receptions for 21 yards and saw his offensive snaps decrease as the season progressed.

A difficult performance early in the year contributed to his reduced role. In a Week 6 matchup against the New York Giants, Dillon had a costly sequence that included a mishandled kickoff and another turnover on the same drive. Following that game, his presence on the field diminished significantly.

He was largely absent from the rotation until the final week of the regular season, when he briefly returned for limited snaps. Even then, his involvement remained minimal, and he was not active during the team’s playoff run.

Competition and roster changes

Another factor that affected Dillon’s playing time was the evolving roster around him. The Eagles made moves to strengthen their backfield, including adding younger talent that quickly earned a larger share of carries.

As those changes took hold, Dillon found himself further down the depth chart. Despite his experience and physical running style, he was unable to regain a consistent role in the offense.

This situation ultimately made his departure unsurprising, as both player and team appeared ready to move in different directions.

Opportunity with the Panthers

Now with the Panthers, Dillon has an opportunity to reset his career trajectory. Carolina’s offense presents a different environment, one where he may have a clearer path to contributing.

The team could benefit from his size and power running, particularly in short yardage situations or as part of a rotational backfield. If he can stay healthy and perform consistently, Dillon has the chance to carve out a meaningful role.

The one-year nature of the deal also adds urgency. With limited time to prove his value, Dillon will need to make a strong impression during training camp and the early part of the season.

Looking ahead to 2026

As the 2026 season approaches, Dillon’s focus will likely center on consistency and reliability. Teams value running backs who can protect the football and contribute in multiple situations, areas where he will aim to improve.

His previous experience, including his early years with the Green Bay Packers, shows that he can be effective when given the opportunity. The challenge now is translating that potential into production in a new setting.

For the Panthers, the signing represents a low risk addition with potential upside. For Dillon, it is a chance to reintroduce himself as a dependable option in the league.
