Trader Joe’s is adding another chapter to its ongoing tote bag saga. The grocery chain confirmed it will release six new Summer Fun Mini Insulated Tote designs on May 20, available in stores nationwide for $3.99 each while supplies last.
The bags measure 10 by 6 by 6 inches and hold up to 1.5 gallons, enough to fit a six-pack of drinks. Each comes with a zipper top and two reinforced handles. Two of the six designs feature stripes, one in red and pink and another in blue and green. The remaining four display a silhouetted Trader Joe’s storefront framed by palm trees, rendered in green, orange, blue and purple.
The tote drop that fans have been waiting for
Trader Joe’s first introduced mini insulated bags in 2024, releasing a teal and magenta version with the same silhouette design. That drop generated immediate buzz, with shoppers forming lines in parking lots before stores opened. The chain distributed two bags per customer to manage the demand, but some buyers still managed to resell pairs online for as much as $155.
The canvas mini tote that preceded it, released in March 2024, went even further. Those bags, priced at $2.99, sold out within hours and later appeared on eBay at prices approaching $1,000 for a set of four colors. A second drop that September sold out across many locations in a single day. Subsequent releases in Halloween colors and pastel spring shades drew similar scenes, with customers camping out for the pastel version as recently as April 2025.
The chain has since released a micro version of the tote and, most recently, confirmed plans for a striped mini canvas tote later this summer, though no release date or additional details have been announced.
Why the Trader Joe’s tote became a cultural fixture
What started as a $2.99 reusable bag has evolved into a legitimate collectible. The totes have developed a devoted following among shoppers and fashion-conscious consumers alike, appearing on international resale platforms including eBay, Depop, Mercari and South Korea’s Coupang. Without Trader Joe’s locations outside the United States, overseas demand has pushed some resale listings well above $1,000.
The grocery chain has been consistent in its position on reselling. A company spokesperson previously said Trader Joe’s does not endorse the resale of any of its products anywhere, and that its stores and their customers remain the priority.
The insulated version offers something the canvas totes do not: functional temperature retention. Trader Joe’s has described the design as a crossover between its larger insulated bags and the smaller canvas totes that became so popular. The company has also noted the bags work equally well as a lunch carrier for school or work as they do for grocery runs.
How to get the Trader Joe’s summer tote on May 20
The Summer Fun Mini Insulated Totes go on sale May 20 in Trader Joe’s stores nationwide. Given the history of previous drops, shoppers who want one should plan to arrive early. The chain has not announced any purchase limits for this release, and quantities are described only as limited.
No online sales are planned. Trader Joe’s does not operate an e-commerce platform, which means the only way to get one is in person.
