The beloved yellow troublemakers are heading to Hollywood in their latest animated adventure, bringing a powerhouse voice cast and monster sized mayhem along for the ride. The Minions are back and this time, they are bringing a full blown monster crisis with them. Illumination has released a new trailer for Minions & Monsters, the latest entry in the Despicable Me franchise, which is set to arrive in theaters on July 1. The film follows the enormous success of 2024’s Despicable Me 4 and looks to deliver the same brand of anarchic, warm-hearted humor that has made the franchise a global phenomenon.

A Hollywood dream that spirals out of control

The premise of Minions & Monsters leans into the franchise’s fondness for spectacularly bad decision-making. The Minions finally land their dream of becoming movie stars in Hollywood only to watch it unravel in the most catastrophic way imaginable. Their on set blunders accidentally unleash a horde of monsters on the world, and what follows is a frantic, laugh filled scramble to undo the damage before things get entirely out of hand. It is a setup that feels perfectly tailored to what fans have grown to love: lovable chaos with genuine heart underneath.

A remarkable voice cast leads the film

Minions & Monsters assembles an impressively talented ensemble to bring the story to life. Three Academy Award winners anchor the cast:  Allison Janney, who took home the Oscar for Tonya, Christoph Waltz, a two-time winner for his work with director Quentin Tarantino; and  Jeff Bridges, honored for Crazy Heart. Joining them is two time Oscar nominee Jesse Eisenberg, along with Zoey Deutch, and Trey Parker, the creative force behind South Park. Rounding out the cast are Bobby Moynihan, best known for his years on Saturday Night Live, and Phil LaMarr, a veteran voice actor recognized for his work on Futurama and King of the Hill.

The creative team behind the yellow troublemakers returns

Director Pierre Coffin, who has guided the franchise since the very beginning, is back behind the camera. Coffin has directed the first three Despicable Me films and the original Minions, and has been the voice of the Minions themselves since their debut in 2010. He co wrote the screenplay alongside Brian Lynch, who previously penned Minions and both The Secret Life of Pets films. Producing the film is Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, alongside Bill Ryan. Lynch also serves as an executive producer on the project, keeping the core creative DNA of the series intact.

A franchise that has earned its place in animation history

The Minions have come a long way since they first appeared as background comic relief in the original Despicable Me in 2010. Over the span of more than a decade, they have evolved into one of the most recognizable animated figures across multiple generations of fans. The broader franchise has accumulated an extraordinary $5.6 billion at the global box office, a figure that places it among the most successful animated series ever made. Their appeal lies in a particular kind of universal, wordless humor that crosses language barriers and age groups with remarkable ease.

What to expect when the film arrives

With Minions & Monsters opening July 1, audiences can look forward to a summer animated event that carries the weight of a beloved franchise and the energy of a genuinely stacked creative team. The new trailer suggests the film will balance its monster fueled set pieces with the kind of character driven warmth that has kept fans returning to this world for over 15 years. For families planning their summer moviegoing, it shapes up to be one of the season’s most anticipated theatrical experiences.
