Why Joseph Parker cleared by UKAD and ready to return to the ring

Joseph Parker is free to fight again after British anti-doping authorities imposed a three-month ban that has already been served, accepting that any cocaine in the former world heavyweight champion’s system at the time of his October bout with Fabio Wardley entered his body out of competition rather than on the day of the fight.

UK Anti-Doping announced Thursday that Parker received the three-month sanction, which was deemed served given that the 34-year-old New Zealand fighter had been provisionally suspended since late November following urine tests taken after his Oct. 25 loss to Wardley at the O2 Arena in London. Parker confirmed on July 28 that he accepted the ruling.

UKAD said it accepted the determination that any prohibited substance had been ingested out-of-competition only and in a context unrelated to sport performance, noting that the substance is prohibited in-competition only under anti-doping rules. The distinction was central to how the ban was calculated and why Parker was cleared to return relatively quickly.

Parker’s account of how the cocaine entered his system

He told investigators he did not knowingly or intentionally ingest the substance and argued that the positive test resulted from his exposure to a controlled substance through a nutritionist he employed in preparation for the fight. That was supported by a written statement from the nutritionist, who admitted to being a regular cocaine user and to daily use of the drug from Oct. 17 through Oct. 24, 2025, the period immediately before the bout.

The nutritionist stated that his drug use took place in his hotel room, where he also prepared meals and drinks he then ingested without his knowledge.

An independent scientific expert concluded that the boxer had administered the drug out-of-competition rather than on the day of the fight. The expert added that in his opinion, ingestion could have occurred orally through food contaminated by the nutritionist.

UKAD noted in its decision that even setting aside the specific merits of Parker’s explanation, the finding that ingestion occurred out-of-competition meant the substance fell outside the prohibited window. The organization confirmed this to the fighter in June, at which point the provisional ban was lifted and the three-month penalty was formally imposed.

Parker’s boxing career

He won the vacant WBO heavyweight title in December 2016 with a majority decision victory over Andy Ruiz Jr. He lost the belt to Anthony Joshua in March 2018 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on a unanimous decision. The Wardley fight last October ended in a loss, leaving the fighter at a difficult juncture heading into the provisional suspension.

Having cleared the anti-doping matter, he said this week on social media that he would be back in the ring soon.

How cocaine anti-doping rules work

Cocaine is listed as a prohibited substance under the World Anti-Doping Agency code but is prohibited in-competition only, meaning it is not banned during training or the period outside of formal competition. In-competition is typically defined as beginning a few days before an event and ending when the athlete is no longer subject to drug testing related to that event.

The distinction matters because athletes who use the drug recreationally well before a competition can, in some circumstances, test positive during competition if it remains in their system. UKAD’s finding that the exposure occurred during the out-of-competition window was the key determination that shaped both the nature of the sanction and the length of the ban.

Anti-doping bodies are required to consider whether a violation was intentional, whether the athlete bore fault or negligence, and whether the substance actually affected performance. The available evidence that he did not intentionally use the drug supported a reduced sanction from what a deliberate doping violation would have carried.
