Jannik Sinner injury and Djokovic’s experience

Jannik Sinner will miss the remainder of the season with knee inflammation, ending a year in which he won Wimbledon and leaving him almost certain to lose the world number one ranking before it closes.

What does he miss?

Four significant commitments. The Shanghai Masters, the Paris Masters in November where he cannot defend the 1,000 points won last year, the ATP Finals later that month, and the Davis Cup Final 8, where Italy hosts as three time defending champion. He has not played since beating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final in July and withdrew from the US Open with a right knee problem.

Why does the ranking go?

Arithmetic rather than form. Rankings run on a rolling twelve month basis, so points earned last year drop off whether or not a player is fit to replace them. With the Paris title alone worth 1,000 points he cannot defend, Zverev is almost certain to take top spot, having won both the French Open and the US Open this year. The third ranked player is too far back to intervene.

How has Zverev responded?

Carefully. He said the ranking is a talking point for everyone at the moment, that he is motivated to keep fighting and that there are things he wants to achieve. Reaching number one through an opponent’s injury is an awkward thing to discuss and he did not dwell on it.

What did Djokovic say?

That he intends to make contact. He said he had not spoken to Sinner since the injury and had only seen the news two days earlier, and would reach out as someone who has been through major injuries. He pointed to his own decision in late July 2017 to sit out the rest of that year with acute elbow pain, which led to the only major surgery of his career.

What was his point about recovery?

That the physical part is not the hard part. He described the mental element of returning, the question of whether you are genuinely healed and free to move without hesitation, and noted that a knee affects every single movement. That is a more useful observation than sympathy, and it comes from someone who has made the return he is describing.

What kind of year was it?

Strong and then interrupted. The Jannik Sinner injury closes a season that included a 30 match winning streak and a Wimbledon title, broken by a second round loss at the French Open and then by the knee. He is a five time major champion at a point in his career where a lost half season matters more to momentum than to anything else.

Is this part of a pattern on tour?

Among the top players, yes. Carlos Alcaraz missed four and a half months this year with a wrist injury, returning in late August and winning the Japan Open on Tuesday. Two of the three highest ranked men have lost substantial portions of the season to injury, on a calendar that has drawn consistent complaint from players.

What happens next?

A winter of recovery and a ranking that resets on results rather than reputation. Sinner returns in 2027 with points to rebuild and, if Djokovic‘s account of his own experience holds, a mental adjustment ahead of the physical one.
