When President Donald Trump left Turkey last month, the world saw him board a familiar aircraft on the tarmac in Ankara. What happened next was something far more deliberate and far more secretive than most people knew at the time.
According to a report, Trump was quietly moved from the older Air Force One he appeared to board in front of cameras and transferred via an airport catering truck to a smaller military jet, an Air Force C-32A. The switch was not a logistical quirk. It was a calculated security move triggered by a credible Iranian assassination threat.
The maneuver drew comparisons to a similar operation carried out in 2000, when President Bill Clinton sent his official Air Force One as a decoy while he flew into Pakistan aboard an unmarked executive jet. The playbook, it turns out, has been used before.
A story built on misdirection
Before leaving Ankara, Trump posted on Truth Social that he would ride an older aircraft “for old time’s sake” to RAF Mildenhall in Britain. He said the newer plane would make the same stop so U.S. service members could tour it. It read like a sentimental detour. It was actually a cover story.
Journalists traveling with what they believed was the presidential aircraft were told to keep their window shades closed in the press cabin during the flight. When reporters later asked Trump about it, he suggested they had been on a dangerous route, stopping short of explaining further.
The C-32A carrying Trump arrived at RAF Mildenhall at around 10:20 p.m. The older Air Force One, carrying reporters and some White House staff who also believed the president was onboard, touched down minutes later.
Trump’s return to the spotlight
At 10:56 p.m. local time in the United Kingdom, Trump descended the stairs of the older Air Force One in full view of the press. He flashed a peace sign but did not stop to speak with reporters. He greeted service members on the ground before making his way to the newer Qatar-donated aircraft.
How exactly Trump moved from the C-32A back to the older plane before that public appearance has not been made clear.
The plane at the center of it all
The new aircraft is a Boeing 747 gifted to the United States by Qatar and refitted by defense contractor L3Harris Technologies. Trump selected its red, white, dark blue and gold design. It was meant to serve as a temporary replacement while Boeing continued to struggle with the long-delayed delivery of next-generation Air Force One jets.
The NATO summit marked the first international trip for the newly renovated plane, and its rapid upgrades had already drawn scrutiny over costs and security. The fact that Iran shares a border with Turkey added a layer of urgency to an already tense backdrop.
The White House, responding to questions about the covert operation, pointed to the growing number of threats facing the president and confirmed that the newer aircraft carries high-level security protocols to protect those onboard.
The Pentagon had not responded to requests for comment by the time the story broke.
