Meta stock: why is the share price sliding sharply today?

Legal threats, tighter global rules, and a costly AI bet collide to rattle the social media giant

Investors watching one of the biggest names in social media got a rough surprise on Monday, and the red numbers on their screens sparked a familiar question about where the stock heads next. Meta shares slid sharply during the session, extending a bumpy stretch that has rattled even longtime believers.

Why Meta stock is falling today

The pullback was steep. Shares dropped around 4% at points during Monday trading, changing hands near $590 and sitting well below the highs the stock touched last summer. The slide leaves Meta more than 30% beneath its all-time peak of roughly $796 reached in August 2025.

Several forces are dragging the price down at once. The most pressing is a looming legal showdown. Meta is heading into a major California trial tied to a coalition of 29 state attorneys general, who argue its platforms harm younger users. The high stakes of that case have investors bracing for potential fallout.

Adding to the unease is fresh regulatory pressure abroad. In Australia, Meta recently pulled access to more than 750,000 Facebook and Instagram accounts to comply with a new rule restricting younger teens from the platforms. Moves like these raise questions about how tightening global oversight could squeeze future growth.

The key pressures weighing on the stock include:

  • A high-stakes California trial over alleged harm to young users
  • Rising global regulation, from Australia to Europe
  • Heavy spending on artificial intelligence with an unclear near-term payoff

The AI spending question

Beyond the courtroom, the deeper worry centers on money. Meta has committed to an enormous buildout of artificial intelligence infrastructure, and the bill is staggering. Capital spending guidance now stretches to a range of $130 billion to $145 billion, while full-year expenses are projected between $165 billion and $169 billion.

That aggressive outlay has squeezed the bottom line. In the most recent quarter, operating margin compressed to 31% from 43% a year earlier, and free cash flow tumbled to just $784 million. Even as revenue climbed 28% to $60.8 billion, earnings came in lighter than Wall Street hoped, and Meta shed nearly 10% right after that report.

The market’s patience is being tested. Some analysts caution that the payoff from all this spending remains hard to see, warning that the return on these bold bets is among the least visible in the sector. Others counter that the investment strengthens the core advertising engine that still generates the bulk of Meta’s cash.

What it means for investors

For anyone holding the stock, the drop stings, yet the bigger picture is more nuanced than a single bad day suggests. Meta remains wildly profitable, its apps still reach billions of people, and its advertising machine continues to hum. The 28% revenue jump is proof the core business is far from broken.

Still, the road ahead looks bumpy. The combination of legal threats, regulatory tightening, and massive AI bets creates real uncertainty, and markets tend to punish uncertainty with volatility. Traders who chase quick swings may find the ride uncomfortable in the weeks ahead.

Long-term believers see the current weakness differently. To them, a temporary dip in a dominant company like Meta can look like an opening rather than a warning. Wall Street analysts largely remain optimistic, with many holding buy ratings and price targets well above where the stock trades now.

The honest answer to why the price is falling is that no single headline tells the whole story. It is a mix of courtroom drama, regulatory heat, and anxiety over spending that has yet to prove its worth. How Meta navigates those pressures will decide whether this slump becomes a brief stumble or the start of a longer reckoning.
