Denver Broncos and the offense that vanished

Some wins come from big plays. This one came from sheer endurance. On a night when the offense stalled, the defense refused to break.

The Denver Broncos beat the Seattle Seahawks 17 to 14 in overtime on Thursday night, Oct. 15, 2026, thanks to a defense that stayed on the field for 82 snaps just four days after a road win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

How did the Denver Broncos defense win the game?

By hounding Seattle’s quarterback all night. Denver sacked Sam Darnold five times, hit him 17 times and intercepted him twice.

Twelve different Broncos hit Darnold at least once, which the team believes is the most in an NFL game since at least 2006. Denver accomplished that without injured starters Pat Surtain II and Talanoa Hufanga.

The head coach called the defense magnificent and said the takeaways and field position made the difference. Denver finished with three takeaways.

One linebacker joked after the game that he felt every one of the 82 snaps. Another said the unit takes pride in being dominant and that pressuring Darnold was part of the plan. He added that the team will do anything it takes to keep winning, even if the offense needs time to get going.

What decided the game in overtime?

Seattle got the ball first in overtime and drove to the Denver 28. Facing third down and 7, Darnold threw for receiver Rashid Shaheed, but Broncos defensive back Ja’Quan McMillian snatched the pass.

Four plays later, Wil Lutz kicked a field goal from 53 yards with 4 minutes, 53 seconds left in overtime to win it.

The fatigue showed late in regulation. Seattle scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, including a touchdown drive of 11 plays and 67 yards, to force overtime.

Why did the Denver Broncos offense struggle?

After a strong start, it disappeared. Denver opened with its longest drive of the season, 16 plays covering 74 yards for a touchdown, then added a touchdown drive of nine plays and 79 yards for a 14 to 3 lead.

Over the next nine possessions before the winning kick, the offense punted seven times. One drive to end the half lost 5 yards, and the final possession of regulation lost a yard. None of those drives lasted more than five plays.

The Denver Broncos finished with only 168 net yards, and their longest play gained just 16 yards.

Quarterback Bo Nix threw for 107 yards. Only one game in his career has produced fewer passing yards for him. Four days earlier, he had 123 against the Chargers. The quarterback credited the defense with the win and said the offense is struggling to create explosive plays. He said he does not know where the disconnect is but believes the offense is capable of much more.

How unusual was the workload for the Denver Broncos?

Very unusual. It was the second time this season the defense faced 82 plays, after the Week 3 win over the Los Angeles Rams, but this time it came on a short week.

Last season, the defense played more than 80 snaps only once, 85 against the Washington Commanders on Nov. 30. In 2024, it topped 75 snaps just twice. That context makes Thursday’s effort, on short rest, even more striking.

What does this win mean for the Denver Broncos?

It keeps them on track. The Denver Broncos now have four wins and two losses despite a schedule that has included five playoff teams from 2025 and both teams from last season’s NFC Championship Game.

If the offense can find its rhythm, the Denver Broncos may be even more dangerous. For now, their defense is carrying the load.
