Tacko Fall and the Sixers and the 7-foot-6 center who has been in China

The Philadelphia 76ers signed three players to Exhibit 10 contracts Tuesday ahead of Sixers training camp, adding 7-foot-6 center Tacko Fall, guard Jameer Nelson Jr. and forward Saint Thomas to the roster group that will report to Camden, New Jersey later this month.

All three are training camp roster additions rather than guaranteed contracts. Exhibit 10 deals provide a path to the G League affiliate if the player does not make the final roster.

Tacko Fall, 29, has not played in the NBA since the 2021-22 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Before that he spent two seasons with the Boston Celtics, where he was a teammate of new Sixers star Jaylen Brown. He most recently played for the Ningbo Rockets in the Chinese Basketball Association.

Nelson Jr. averaged 18.9 points on 47.5 percent shooting with 3.4 assists and 1.2 steals in 25 games for the G League’s Stockton Kings last season. His father, Jameer Nelson Sr., is the executive vice president of basketball operations for the Sixers.

Thomas played for the Sixers G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, last season. He averaged 12.5 points on 46.6 percent shooting with 5.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.

The Exhibit 10 context

Exhibit 10 contracts are a standard mechanism for NBA teams to invite additional players to training camp beyond the guaranteed roster. Players on these deals earn a set salary during camp and, if waived before the season begins, can receive a bonus if they sign with the team’s G League affiliate and remain there for a designated period. They do not count as guaranteed contracts against the salary cap.

For Fall, the signing represents a return to the NBA system after time overseas. At 7-foot-6, Fall remains one of the tallest players ever to appear in the league, and his combination of size and shot-blocking presence gives him a niche that very few players can offer. The question has always been whether his offensive limitations allow him to stay on a roster, which is why Exhibit 10 rather than a guaranteed deal is the appropriate entry point for Fall.

For Nelson Jr., the path through the G League and back to an NBA training camp reflects both the family connection in the organization and the merit of a productive Stockton Kings season. For Thomas, the continuity with the Blue Coats organization gives the Sixers a player they already know and who has familiarity with the system.

The Philadelphia Sixers open training camp later this month in preparation for a season with Jaylen Brown and Joel Embiid expected to anchor one of the more scrutinized rosters in the Eastern Conference.
