Kerry Washington and her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, rarely let cameras into their relationship but this week, the couple made an exception.
The pair stepped out together on, attending Jay-Z’s concert at Stade de France in Paris. Washington documented the outing on her Instagram Stories, giving followers a brief but memorable look at their evening.
A night of music and surprises
The clip Washington shared was set to Jay-Z’s track Public Service Announcement (Interlude) and included an on screen label noting the rapper’s Paris stop. Footage showed Washington and Asomugha singing along and swaying to the music, interspersed with shots of Jay-Z commanding the stage. The night closed out with a fireworks display over the stadium.
One of the concert’s biggest moments came when Justin Timberlake joined Jay-Z onstage for an unannounced performance of “Holy Grail,” the pair’s 2013 hit from Jay-Z’s album Magna Carta Holy Grail. Timberlake later posted his own recap of the moment, sharing a set of photos that included a shot of the two performers together under the stadium’s lights and an image of the crowd reacting to the surprise.
A relationship built on privacy
Washington, 49, and Asomugha, 45, have built successful careers in entertainment and professional sports, respectively, but have consistently avoided turning their marriage into a public spectacle. The two wed in June 2013 during a low key outdoor ceremony in Idaho, held at the home of one of Washington’s friends, guests were flown in on a small private plane, and the wedding itself was modest in scale, with attendees staying at the house and the couple writing their own vows.
The source described the affair as intimate, noting that only family and close friends were present and that the tone throughout was simple and heartfelt.
Washington touched on her marriage briefly during a 2023 interview with Marie Claire, describing how her relationship with Asomugha helps ground her and reconnect her with her sense of self.
Growing their family away from the spotlight
The couple share three children together. Their daughter, Isabelle Amarachi, was born in April 2014, followed by son Caleb Kelechi in October 2016. Asomugha also has a daughter from a previous relationship, whom the couple co-parent.
A source who spoke back in 2016 described Washington’s excitement at becoming a mother of two, noting that having her first child transformed her outlook and left her eager to grow her family further. The source also mentioned that Washington maintained healthy habits throughout her pregnancy.
Shielding her children from public life
Washington has long been candid about her determination to keep her kids out of the public eye. In a March 2020 cover interview with InStyle, she explained that she remains extremely careful about shielding her three children from media attention, adding that most parents would want to spare their children from situations that might frighten them. She also expressed concern about the risks of exploitation that come with growing up in a social media driven world.
That protective instinct appears to extend to her marriage as well. Despite both having high public profiles, Washington and Asomugha have largely kept the specifics of their day to day life together and their approach to parenting out of interviews and away from red carpets.
What’s next for Washington
The Paris outing comes as Washington gears up for her next major project. She stars in Animals, a film directed by Ben Affleck, which is set to premiere on Netflix on Oct. 9. Details about the movie’s plot have been kept largely under wraps, mirroring the same low profile approach Washington tends to take with her personal life.
For now, fans are left with the rare snapshot from Paris a glimpse of a couple who, more than a decade into their marriage, still know how to enjoy a night out together, even amid packed stadiums and A-list surprises.
