Hawks Hornets trade and the fit in Atlanta

Atlanta is acquiring Dorian Finney Smith from Charlotte in exchange for Buddy Hield, Ryan Nembhard and cash, a deal both teams announced Tuesday.

What exactly is moving?

Finney Smith goes to Atlanta. Hield, Nembhard and cash go to Charlotte, which is expected to waive Nembhard. The Hawks Hornets trade creates a $2.1 million trade exception for Atlanta and a likely $4.5 million exception for Charlotte, mechanisms that let each team absorb salary in a future deal without sending matching money back.

What does Atlanta get?

A defensive wing with playoff experience. Finney Smith has three years and $53 million remaining on his contract, including a player option for the 2028 to 29 season. He missed the first two months of last season while with Houston, which is the caveat attached to the acquisition. He had arrived in Charlotte earlier this offseason in a separate trade.

What does Charlotte get?

Shooting and a shorter commitment. Hield is owed roughly $9.5 million this season with a player option just above $10 million for 2027 to 28. He reached Atlanta in the deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Golden State and then appeared in only seven games for the Hawks, so Charlotte is acquiring a shooter whose recent sample is close to nonexistent.

Why would Atlanta make this move?

Positional need, most plausibly. A team swapping a specialist shooter for a wing who defends multiple positions is prioritising two way play over floor spacing, and taking on two additional contract years to do it. The Hawks also lost a rookie to a torn ACL for the season, which thins the roster in ways that make a proven veteran more valuable than a player who did not crack the rotation.

Why would Charlotte make it?

Flexibility. Moving three years of salary for one plus an option gives the Hornets a cleaner path through the next two offseasons, and the larger trade exception created here is a usable asset for a team that is likely to be taking on salary rather than shedding it.

Who is the player being waived?

Nembhard, 23, went undrafted and played his rookie season with Dallas, averaging 6.6 points and 5.3 assists in 19.5 minutes. He reached Atlanta in a three team deal that sent Zaccharie Risacher to Dallas and returned Luguentz Dort to the Hawks. Being included in a Hawks Hornets trade primarily to make salary work, and then waived, is a common outcome for a player on a minimum contract with limited guarantees.

Is this a significant move?

Moderate. Neither player is a franchise piece, and the deal will not reshape either team’s ceiling. What it does show is Atlanta willing to trade shooting for defence and to absorb longer money to get it, which is a directional signal about how the roster is being built.

What should be watched?

Whether Finney Smith holds up. His value rests entirely on availability and on maintaining the corner shooting that makes a defensive wing playable in modern lineups. If both hold, the Hawks Hornets trade looks sensible in a year. If the games missed last season recur, Atlanta has taken on two extra years of salary for a player it cannot use.
