IRS raises 2027 tax brackets. What it means for your check

The new tax brackets look generous on paper, but the real savings for most families are modest

The IRS released its 2027 tax brackets on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, raising the income thresholds for all seven federal tax rates to keep pace with inflation. The rates themselves stay the same, from 10% to 37%, and the changes apply to tax returns filed in 2028.

The standard deduction also climbs to $33,200 for married couples filing jointly and $16,600 for single filers, while the child tax credit rises $100 to $2,300 per child. These moves protect a raise from being eaten by inflation, but in real dollars, most households will notice the change in the tens or low hundreds, not the thousands.

What are the 2027 tax brackets?

The IRS set the following thresholds for tax year 2027.

  • 37% for single filers with taxable income over $661,375, or over $793,650 for married couples filing jointly
  • 35% for income over $264,550, or over $529,100 for joint filers
  • 32% for income over $208,325, or over $416,650 for joint filers
  • 24% for income over $109,125, or over $218,250 for joint filers
  • 22% for income over $52,025, or over $104,050 for joint filers
  • 12% for income over $12,800, or over $25,600 for joint filers
  • 10% for income of $12,800 or less, or $25,600 or less for joint filers

Each rate applies only to the dollars inside that bracket. A single filer with $60,000 in taxable income pays 22% only on the slice above $52,025. Everything below that is taxed at 10% and 12%. Moving into a higher bracket never means your whole paycheck gets taxed at the higher rate.

How much will the new standard deduction save you?

Less than the headline suggests. The standard deduction for married couples filing jointly rises $1,000 from 2026, while single filers and married people filing separately get $16,600 and heads of household get $24,925.

Here is the math nobody is running for you. For a married couple in the 12% bracket, an extra $1,000 deduction cuts their tax bill by about $120. In the 22% bracket, it is about $220. A single filer in the 12% bracket saves about $60 from the $500 bump, and about $110 in the 22% bracket.

That is the point of inflation adjustments. They are designed to stop bracket creep, when rising wages push people into higher brackets even though their buying power has not grown. They keep you even. They do not put you ahead.

What changes for families with kids?

The maximum child tax credit rises to $2,300 per child, and the refundable portion climbs to $1,800, both up $100 from 2026. The refundable piece matters most for working families with lower incomes. If a family owes little or no federal tax, that $1,800 is the most it can get back per child, even though the full credit is $2,300.

The Earned Income Tax Credit tops out at $8,496 for workers with three or more qualifying children, up from $8,231. For families juggling rent, groceries and gas, that credit often decides whether tax season brings relief or stress.

Who gets the biggest boost from the 2027 changes?

The numbers tell their own story. The estate tax exclusion jumps to $15.48 million from $15 million, and the annual gift exclusion rises to $20,000 from $19,000. That is a $480,000 increase in what wealthy estates can pass on without federal estate tax, compared with a $100 increase in the child tax credit.

Both changes come from the same inflation formula. But the gap shows how differently the adjustments land depending on where you sit.

When do the 2027 tax brackets take effect?

The new brackets apply to income you earn in 2027, and you will use them when you file in early 2028. They do not change the return you file this coming spring. The IRS framed the updates as continued benefits from the Working Families Tax Cuts law.

Now is a smart time to check your withholding and plan around the new thresholds, especially if a raise or new job could move part of your income into the next bracket.
