Carmelo Anthony and a vote for the Knicks

Few people understand the pressure of playing in New York better than former Knicks stars. One of the best known is offering the current champions some simple advice about their contract drama.

Carmelo Anthony says the New York Knicks made the right call when they paused extension talks with several players to focus entirely on basketball.

What did Carmelo Anthony say about the Knicks?

Speaking Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, at NBC Sports studios in Stamford, Connecticut, Anthony said he was not alarmed by the tension surrounding a team that should be enjoying its success.

He explained that the modern NBA moves so quickly that a team barely gets time to celebrate a title before business takes over again. He framed the shift as a normal part of life for a championship team. In his view, stopping the negotiations was a smart move, and the contract questions can wait until the season ends.

Carmelo Anthony also said that whatever happens will happen, but that basketball should come first right now. He believes both the players and the front office understand that the priority is defending the championship.

Why did the Knicks pause extension talks?

The team announced Friday, Oct. 9, that it would table all extension discussions until later in the season. Talks with Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart, who are both eligible for new deals, had stalled.

The Knicks said they wanted to devote their full attention to defending the franchise’s first NBA title in 53 years. The rare public statement followed weeks of comments from Towns about his contract during the preseason.

Where do Towns and Hart stand?

Towns is eligible for an extension worth $276 million over four years. He is set to earn $57 million this season and holds a player option worth $61.1 million for next season. Team ownership has said it will not let payroll climb into the second salary cap apron, which limits how far New York can go in negotiations.

The star center has made the All-Star team in both of his seasons with New York. He told reporters over the weekend that the team’s decision came as news to him and left him disappointed.

Hart will earn $21 million this season, and the Knicks hold a team option worth $22.4 million for next season. He said he was not frustrated, though he has previously pointed out what a lack of progress could mean when the trade deadline arrives in February. Reserves Miles McBride and Tyler Kolek are also eligible for new contracts.

Why does Carmelo Anthony’s view carry weight?

Not many voices know the Knicks quite like Carmelo Anthony. He was a frequent All-Star in New York during a Hall of Fame career and spent much of his prime as the face of the franchise.

He also has a personal link to the front office. Leon Rose, now the Knicks president, was his agent when he was traded to New York in 2011, a deal that brought him home to the city where he was born.

Anthony was a frequent spectator during the championship run last season. He said he trusts that the players and management can sort out their differences respectfully.

What is Carmelo Anthony doing now?

These days, Carmelo Anthony is preparing for his second season as an analyst on “NBA Showtime,” the studio show on NBC.

His role gives him a regular platform to weigh in on the league, and the Knicks are sure to remain a frequent topic as their title defense unfolds over the coming months.

For now, Carmelo Anthony is urging patience. The contracts can wait, he suggests, as long as the focus stays on winning another ring.
