Why New York Knicks raise the banner against LeBron on opening night

The NBA will open its new season on Oct. 20 with the New York Knicks raising their championship banner against LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers in what promises to be one of the more anticipated opening nights in recent memory, a matchup that puts the defending champions against a franchise remade over the summer around James and two other major additions.

The NBA announced Tuesday that the Knicks-76ers game tips off at 7 p.m. ET as the marquee game of a tripleheader. The Boston Celtics visiting the Detroit Pistons opens the night at 3 p.m. ET on NBC in an unusual matinee slot, while the Oklahoma City Thunder host the San Antonio Spurs at 9:30 p.m. in a Western Conference finals rematch.

The 76ers were swept by the Knicks 4-0 in last season’s Eastern Conference semifinals, making the opening night pairing a direct callback to that series. James, 41, signed a two-year, $8 million deal in July to join Philadelphia, and Jaylen Brown was acquired in a trade from the Boston Celtics. The new-look Sixers also have Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.

The opening night matchups in context

The Thunder and Spurs played seven games in the Western Conference finals, with San Antonio winning the series on Oklahoma City’s home floor. Returning to the arena in a rematch on opening night, this time in a nationally televised window, gives the game obvious stakes beyond the standard early-season context.

The Celtics went out in the first round of last season’s playoffs, while the Pistons advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals in one of the more surprising runs of the postseason. Detroit hosting Boston is a quality afternoon game that rewards casual fans tuning in for an accessible start to the evening.

Opening week highlights

The following day, Oct. 21, brings a pair of doubleheaders on ESPN that include Giannis Antetokounmpo making his Heat debut against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Golden State Warriors at the Los Angeles Lakers in a game James left in July. Oct. 22 features the Cleveland Cavaliers visiting the 76ers and the Denver Nuggets visiting the Thunder.

On Oct. 23, Prime Video will carry two games, the Knicks at the Celtics at 7 p.m. ET and the Houston Rockets at the Spurs at 9:30 p.m. The Rockets-Spurs game is scheduled for the Moody Center in Austin rather than San Antonio.

Christmas Day

The Christmas schedule was also announced, with five games on ABC and ESPN. James will face his former Lakers team at 41, making his latest championship push. Victor Wembanyama will return to Madison Square Garden where he scored a Spurs franchise record 42 points on Christmas 2024, the same game where Mikal Bridges scored 41 in a Knicks victory. The Knicks will be playing their 59th Christmas game, a record for any NBA franchise, continuing a tradition that dates to the league’s first Christmas matchup in 1947 at Madison Square Garden.

Other Christmas matchups include the Spurs against the Knicks, the Heat against the Celtics, the Thunder against the Timberwolves, and the Nuggets against the Warriors.

James would make his 21st Christmas Day appearance in what will be his record 24th NBA season. Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will be playing in his third Christmas game, while Lakers star Luka Doncic will be making his sixth holiday appearance.

What the schedule signals

The NBA‘s decision to open the season with the Knicks raising their banner against James and the rebuilt 76ers reflects the league’s awareness of where its narrative energy is concentrated heading into the season. The Knicks won their first title in decades, James is on a new team in Philadelphia making his latest championship push, and the Eastern Conference has been reshuffled in ways that make its hierarchy genuinely uncertain.

The full schedule will be released on Thursday.
