One of modern Formula 1’s great turning points may have started with a holiday house call.
Christian Horner says he rejected an offer to become team principal at Mercedes in 2012, before the team hired his future rival Toto Wolff. He makes the claim in his new autobiography, “Drive,” which is released Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026.
What did Christian Horner reveal about Mercedes?
Christian Horner writes that Niki Lauda, the racing great who had just become nonexecutive chairman of Mercedes, came to his home during the Christmas break and asked him to lead the team.
Horner says he was caught off guard, having never considered leaving Red Bull. Lauda then laid out what Horner describes as dazzling figures for his potential salary.
According to the book, Lauda told him Red Bull could never pay what Mercedes could, said he respected him as a racer and took a crude shot at Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko. Marko was a powerful figure at Red Bull for years and was known for his blunt style.
Why did Christian Horner say no?
Loyalty. Horner writes that he had won world championships with Red Bull and built the team from scratch, and that he felt loyal to the team and to Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz. Mateschitz, who built Red Bull into a global brand, died in 2022.
At the time, Sebastian Vettel had just won his third straight world title and Red Bull was on the rise. Vettel would win a fourth straight title in 2013, extending Red Bull’s run at the top.
How was Lewis Hamilton part of the story?
The offer came after Horner and Lauda had discussed Hamilton’s future. The British driver was weighing a move from McLaren after the 2012 season.
Hamilton held talks with Red Bull, but they went nowhere because of money. Horner knew Mercedes was interested and saw helping a friend as a way to weaken McLaren, then Red Bull’s closest rival.
Hamilton joined Mercedes for 2013. Horner writes that he initially saw the pairing of Hamilton and Wolff as interesting but unimportant. He writes that he did not think much harm could come from it.
What happened after Christian Horner turned down Mercedes?
Mercedes hired Wolff from Williams in January 2013. The team went on to win eight straight constructors’ championships from 2014 to 2021, one of the most dominant runs in the sport’s history, while Hamilton won six drivers’ titles with the team. Hamilton’s six titles with Mercedes came in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, adding to the one he won with McLaren in 2008.
Christian Horner stayed at Red Bull until he was dismissed in July 2025. He oversaw four world championships with Vettel and four more with Max Verstappen. Verstappen’s titles came in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Horner and Wolff became fierce rivals, a feud that peaked during the dramatic 2021 title fight between Verstappen and Hamilton. The two clashed often in public, and their rivalry was a central storyline in the Netflix series “Drive to Survive.”
What else is in the Christian Horner book?
“Drive” also includes Horner’s account of Red Bull blocking potential moves for Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso, according to earlier excerpts. The book arrives as the current title race heads to the U.S. Grand Prix, where Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli could clinch the championship.
Lauda, who won three world championships, died in 2019. He played a key role in bringing Hamilton to Mercedes and was a respected voice in the paddock until his death.
The book offers a rare look at decisions that shaped the sport. For Christian Horner, the Mercedes offer remains a door he chose to leave closed.
