Lewis Hamilton and the casino line

Lewis Hamilton finished third after recovering from near the back of the field, following a Ferrari decision to start him on slick tyres on a wet surface at the Bahrain Grand Prix, run this year at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit.

What went wrong at the start?

The tyre choice. He dropped from second to 16th on the opening lap as cars on intermediates passed him, with his Ferrari struggling for grip. He said he had raised concerns before the start, telling the pit wall twice that the track was still wet after inspecting the pit lane surface himself. The team’s reasoning was that the long delay meant the circuit would dry quickly and might already be at the crossover point.

When did he know?

At the end of the pit lane. He said that when the cars around him removed their tyre blankets and revealed intermediates, he understood he was in trouble, and that the spray coming off the car ahead confirmed it as they pulled out.

Why not pit immediately?

Because the loss was already taken. He calculated that he had conceded a substantial gap and that another stop would add to it, so the better option was to wait for the track to dry. When the team pressed him over radio to come in for intermediates, he said he wanted to stay out and see the gamble through.

Did it work?

Partly. Once the surface dried he began catching cars and described the Ferrari as feeling strong, crediting pit work and strategy in the later phase. Finishing third from that position is a genuine recovery, and he said he had not expected a podium.

Is he critical of the team?

Measured rather than critical. Lewis Hamilton joked that he would not be visiting a casino with the strategists, said there would be an open dialogue, and praised mechanics, engineers and support staff while stating plainly that there are areas needing improvement and that nobody is in denial about them. He also said he believed a chance to fight for the win had been available.

How is that reading?

As restraint with a point inside it. A driver who finishes third after a strategic error has two options, absorbing it publicly or saying what he thinks, and he did something closer to the second while keeping it civil. The casino line is a joke that is also a judgment.

Why was the race disrupted?

Two separate delays. A rainstorm pushed back the start, and a further delay followed a governing body software issue affecting all cars. The combination produced the long wait that shaped the tyre decision.

What does this mean for Ferrari?

Another strategy question, in a season where the team’s direction has already been under scrutiny. The car was quick enough to recover from 18th to the podium, which is the encouraging part. Lewis Hamilton reaching that position by overtaking rather than by being placed there is the part the team will be asked about.
