Ilhan Omar faces new scrutiny over a 2009 Minnesota marriage license application that reportedly shows her last name changed twice on a single line. A certified Hennepin County copy, published by the New York Post on Oct. 30, shows the surname first written as Omar. It was then crossed out and replaced with Elmi, then crossed out again and changed back to Omar. The application was for her marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen.
The form matters because the Justice Department is investigating whether Ilhan Omar obtained U.S. citizenship in 2000 using an inaccurate name or birthdate. A recent federal court filing referred to her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, also known as Ilhan Abdullahi Omar. Omar has not been charged with any crime and denies wrongdoing. Her office maintains that Ilhan Omar is her real name.
Is Ilhan Omar’s real name Elmi?
That has not been established. The federal filing uses the Elmi name, and President Donald Trump has called on her to resign over it. But Somali names often work differently from American surnames. A child’s name may carry the given names of the father and paternal grandfather instead of a fixed family name handed down. A form designed around American naming habits can easily produce this kind of confusion. It is also unclear who filled out the 2009 application, though the Post reported it appears to be in one person’s handwriting.
Black Americans know something about records written by other people’s hands. Plenty of our family trees run into census takers and clerks who spelled names however they saw fit. That history does not settle Omar’s case either way. It does explain why a scratched-out line on a government form is not, on its own, proof of anything.
Did Ilhan Omar marry her brother?
There is no public proof that Elmi is her brother. The rumor has circulated online for roughly a decade, and fact checkers have found no evidence establishing a family tie. When MS NOW host Chris Hayes asked her directly, Omar said she was not aware of any such relationship. She has blamed the claim on right-wing conspiracy theorists. On the 2009 form, the couple marked that they were not related by blood or adoption.
Critics point to other records. The New York Times reported on Oct. 29 that the FBI and Homeland Security investigated the marriage in 2016 and found some evidence it may have been fraudulent. Prosecutors did not file charges because the five-year statute of limitations had run out, and the case was formally closed in 2021. Former Minnesota state Rep. Joe Radinovich, a Democrat, posted on X that he believes the allegation is likely true.
Why is the Ilhan Omar investigation heating up now?
Homeland Security agents searched Ilhan Omar’s Washington home on Oct. 12, about three weeks before the Nov. 3 midterm elections. The current probe reportedly centers on her naturalization paperwork, including her birth year. Some records list Oct. 4, 1981, and others list the same date in 1982. That single year matters. Omar has said she became a citizen at 17 through her father. If she was already 18, she would not have qualified that way.
Omar wrote on X that Trump has targeted her with baseless attacks for 10 years, and she calls the probe political payback. House Democratic leaders called the search an abuse of power, and former President Barack Obama condemned it on X as appalling. Republicans, including Rep. Nancy Mace, argue Democrats lost the high ground after defending the 2022 FBI search of Trump’s Florida estate.
What happens next for Omar?
No charges have been filed. Legal experts told the Post that civil denaturalization has no statute of limitations, which keeps that option open no matter how old the marriage questions are. For now, the case rests on decades-old paperwork, family records and a surname that changed twice on one line of a 2009 form.
