Aaron Donald and what a tunnel run can do

Aaron Donald ran onto the field in Inglewood on Monday night for the first time since the end of the 2023 season, and the reaction inside the stadium set the tone for a 28 to 6 win over the New York Giants.

How did the return look?

Emotional before it was tactical. Aaron Donald said he jumped around more than he used to on the way out of the tunnel and described the reception as special. His head coach said the introduction produced chills for anyone paying attention. The quarterback said he could barely contain himself watching it.

What did the stat line say?

Three tackles, one for a loss and zero pressures across 32 defensive snaps, roughly 58 percent of the total. Asked whether a snap count was in place, the coach declined to confirm one directly while making clear that removing Aaron Donald from a game is not a simple matter of telling him to come off.

How did he feel afterward?

Sore, by his own description, with a wrap on his right hand that he also called sore and nothing more. He noted he had two hurried practices before playing a game and acknowledged early rust, saying things slowed down for him as the second half progressed. That is a reasonable account from a player who retired, stayed retired for a season and a half and returned on Aug. 30.

Did his presence change the defense?

The numbers suggest it did, even without a pressure of his own. The Rams posted a pass rush win rate of 66.7 percent, meaning they beat their block within 2.5 seconds on two thirds of rushes. That figure tied for third best in the league in Week 2 and was the team’s highest in any game since Week 11 of the 2022 season. A week earlier, in a loss to San Francisco, the same unit managed 35 percent, sixth lowest in the league that week.

Why would that happen without him producing pressures?

Attention. A player of Aaron Donald’s reputation draws double teams and protection slides, which leaves other rushers in one on one situations they would not otherwise get. The coach described it as elevating everyone around him. The caveat is sample size. One game against one offensive line is not proof of a restored pass rush, and the Giants lost their starting quarterback on the opening series, which changes how any defense gets to play.

What else explained the improvement?

The coach volunteered a second reason and pointed it at himself, calling out the travel arrangements for the Week 1 loss in Australia. The Rams flew in the day before that game while San Francisco arrived a week early, a decision he had defended at the time and has now returned to unprompted.

What is the outlook for his workload?

Managed, almost certainly. A 58 percent snap share in a first game back is not an accident, and the soreness he described is what a body absent from football contact for that long reports afterward. The question for the Rams is whether Aaron Donald can sustain that share weekly or whether the number comes down against opponents who do not lose their quarterback early.

What does this mean for the season?

Los Angeles moves to 1 and 1 with its defense looking closer to what it was built to be. How much of that belongs to Aaron Donald will take several more weeks to establish.
