Veteran defender Jamal Adams has agreed to terms with the Minnesota Vikings just as training camp gets underway, joining a defense led by a coordinator known for creative and unconventional personnel packages.

Adams, 30, confirmed the move himself on social media Monday night, marking the start of what he referred to as his tenth professional season while embracing the team’s popular fan rallying cry. A person familiar with the agreement confirmed the deal shortly after his announcement.

A front office reunion helped bring Adams to Minnesota

The team’s general manager previously played a role in bringing Adams to Seattle years ago through a high profile trade completed before the 2020 season, giving the two sides an existing working relationship as this latest deal came together. Minnesota has also been closely monitoring the situation surrounding longtime safety Harrison Smith, who is reportedly weighing retirement, though Adams has spent recent seasons playing primarily at linebacker rather than his original safety position. Last season, every one of his defensive snaps came at linebacker.

How Adams could fit into Minnesota’s scheme

The Vikings’ defensive coordinator has developed a reputation for unusual personnel groupings, frequently deploying three safeties simultaneously with one player rotating between edge rusher, linebacker and defensive back responsibilities. Adams could help address depth concerns if Smith ultimately does not return, though recent injury history has limited his availability, and he has not held a full time starting role since 2023. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation as an effective blitzer, accumulating more than twenty career sacks, including a significant portion during a particularly productive two year stretch early in his career.

What Adams brings after a bounce back season

Last season with his previous team, Adams appeared in the vast majority of games, his healthiest stretch in several years, recording solid tackle numbers along with a sack, multiple quarterback pressures and a forced fumble. He reached at least four tackles in a game on several occasions, suggesting a level of durability that had been missing in prior seasons.

A career that once reached elite heights

Earlier in his career, Adams ranked among the league’s most dominant safeties. Selected with a top ten pick in the 2017 draft, he earned multiple Pro Bowl selections and first team All Pro recognition within his first few professional seasons. Injuries limited his availability during his time in Seattle, though he still added another Pro Bowl nod during that stretch. He also spent brief stints with two additional teams in 2024 before landing with his most recent club last season.

Across his career, Adams has appeared in over one hundred games, starting the vast majority of them, while accumulating hundreds of tackles, more than twenty sacks, several interceptions and numerous pass deflections, a résumé that reflects both his early peak as one of the league’s top defensive backs and his more recent transition into a versatile linebacker role.
