Alex Eala and the pattern that returned

Alex Eala will take bronze at the Asian Games after losing to China’s Wang Xiyu 6 to 3, 3 to 6, 2 to 6 in the women’s singles semifinals on Thursday in Nagoya, matching the result she achieved in 2023.

How did the match turn?

She led 5 to 0. Eala broke repeatedly to open, winning the first three games and holding through the fifth, before her opponent won three straight to close to 5 to 3. She needed four set points to finish the opener. Her return game carried that set, winning 21 return points to 12.

What happened after that?

The pattern reversed. Wang broke in the fourth game of the second set and again in the sixth to lead 5 to 1, and although Eala broke back and held to reach 5 to 3, the set went the other way. The third followed the same shape, with breaks in the third and fifth games putting Wang ahead 4 to 1 before she closed it out.

Is this the same problem as before?

The same shape, at a higher level. In Singapore last month Eala led in all three sets and lost all three, unable to convert the chances she created. Here she needed four set points to close a set she led 5 to 0, then lost two straight. The quarterfinal win over Joanna Garland had looked like a correction. This suggests the issue is closing out rather than creating, and that it persists against stronger opposition.

Who beat her?

The world number 85, ranked below Eala, which makes the result a genuine upset on paper. Wang recovered from a position where the first set looked gone and won nine of the final eleven games, which is the kind of turnaround that reflects composure as much as ball striking.

What does the medal represent?

A repeat rather than a step forward. She took bronze at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023, losing in the last four to the eventual champion in three sets. Matching that at 21 is a solid result and not the improvement she came for, and she had chosen to play these Games over a tour event in China, a decision she had said she did not take lightly.

Is bronze automatic?

Yes at these Games, where both losing semifinalists are awarded it rather than playing off. She secured the medal by reaching the last four.

What should be read into this?

Less than the scoreline suggests about her level, more about a specific skill. A player who opens a semifinal by winning five straight games against higher ranked opposition is not lacking in quality. Converting dominant positions into completed sets is a discrete and coachable thing, and it is the only thing standing between these performances and better results.

What comes next?

The final is an all Chinese affair, with Wang facing Zhang Shuai. For Alex Eala the schedule resumes on tour, where the same question will follow her.
