Alex Eala and what changed since Singapore

Alex Eala has secured at least a bronze medal at the Asian Games after beating Joanna Garland of Chinese Taipei 7 to 5, 6 to 0 in the women’s singles quarterfinals on Wednesday in Nagoya.

How did the match go?

Tight, then not. Both players broke serve in the opening two games and the first set stayed level through 5 to 5, with the lead changing hands repeatedly. Eala then took three straight games, breaking in the eleventh, to close it at 7 to 5. The second set was a shutout. She broke in the second, fourth and fifth games and held in the sixth.

What do the numbers show?

A return game doing the work. She led 29 to 17 on receiving points in the first set. Her opponent held the advantage on first serve points at 21 to 12, which is why the set stayed close despite Eala winning the longer exchanges on return.

Why does this result matter beyond the medal?

Because of what happened last week. In Singapore she led at stages of all three sets and lost, needing five break points for one break and seven set points for one set. The gap between creating chances and taking them was the story of that loss. Converting a tight first set and then conceding nothing is the direct answer to it, and doing so within a fortnight is a fast correction.

Is this a pattern now?

Two in a row. The second set was her second consecutive bagel at these Games, having done the same in the round of 16. Finishing sets without giving anything back is a different habit from winning them narrowly, and it is the habit that survives against better opponents.

Who does she face next?

The fourth seed, Wang Xiyu of China, who came through in three sets against Moyuka Uchijima. That is a clear step up from the quarterfinal, and the seeding reflects a player who will not surrender a set the way this one ended.

What is guaranteed already?

A medal, at minimum bronze, since Asian Games tennis awards bronze to both losing semifinalists rather than staging a playoff. For Alex Eala at 21 that is a first Asian Games medal and a significant marker in a career that has drawn more national attention than tennis in the Philippines has generated before.

Is she finished for the day?

No. A women’s doubles second round match alongside Shaira Rivera was scheduled for later the same afternoon against a Chinese pairing. Playing two matches in a day mid tournament is a workload question heading into a semifinal, and one worth watching if the singles goes long.

What would gold require?

Two more wins, both against seeded opposition in all likelihood. The semifinal is the harder test of the two on current form, and Alex Eala arrives at it with more momentum than at any point this month.
