Clinching the top spot in men’s tennis did not mean the work was done. The new No. 1 in waiting had to fight through a sore ankle and a dangerous opponent to stay alive in Shanghai.

Alexander Zverev beat Alexander Bublik 7 to 6, 4 to 6, 7 to 6 on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, to reach the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters. The Shanghai Masters is one of nine ATP Masters 1000 events, the most prestigious tournaments on the men’s tour outside the four Grand Slams.

How did Alexander Zverev beat Bublik?

The match came down to tiebreakers. In the first set, Zverev saved three set points before taking the tiebreaker 8 to 6.

Bublik answered by winning the second set 6 to 4 to force a decider. Zverev then dominated the final tiebreaker, winning it 7 to 1.

Bublik’s big serve kept him in the match. He hit 20 aces to Zverev’s 15 but also committed eight double faults, compared with just one for Zverev. Bublik, who represents Kazakhstan, is known for a powerful serve and an unpredictable style that includes underarm serves and trick shots.

It was only the second win for Alexander Zverev in five career meetings with Bublik. Bublik had won three of their previous four meetings, making him a tricky matchup for the German.

Is Alexander Zverev injured?

Zverev said his ankle bothered him during the match. He described it as understandable given how much tennis he has played recently, and he called that workload a sign of how well he has been playing.

He added that he has been feeling the strain on his body more and more, but that he was happy to get through.

How did Alexander Zverev secure the top ranking for 2026?

He locked it up on Monday. Once Carlos Alcaraz, ranked third, lost, Zverev became assured of finishing the year ranked No. 1. Finishing the year at No. 1 is one of the most coveted honors in the sport, a reward for the most consistent results across a full season.

He is currently No. 2 behind Jannik Sinner. But Sinner has ended his season because of inflammation in his right knee, and Zverev will move past him in the rankings next month. Sinner had been the dominant player on tour for much of the past two seasons.

The milestone caps a breakthrough year. Zverev won the French Open and the U.S. Open in 2026, the first two Grand Slam titles of his career.

For years, Zverev was known as one of the best players without a major title, having reached several Grand Slam finals without winning one. His wins in Paris and New York changed that narrative. Zverev, 29, also won Olympic singles gold at the Tokyo Games.

Who does Alexander Zverev face next?

Alexander Zverev will meet Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals. The Australian has won their last two meetings, both at the Laver Cup. The Laver Cup is a team event that pits Europe against the rest of the world.

De Minaur advanced by beating Karen Khachanov 6 to 3, 6 to 4. De Minaur, one of the fastest players on tour, has built a reputation for relentless defense.

In another match, Arthur Gea defeated Jakub Mensik 7 to 6, 6 to 4. Gea, a rising French player, earned a notable win over Mensik of the Czech Republic.

With the top ranking secured, Alexander Zverev can now focus on adding another trophy to a remarkable season. A strong finish in Shanghai would add to his Masters collection and build momentum for the final events of the season.
