Anthropic opens its books, and the gamble is staggering

The AI company’s IPO filing reveals explosive growth, eye-watering losses and a list of fears it is no longer keeping quiet.

Anthropic is ready to let the public see its finances, and the numbers read like a stress test for the entire artificial intelligence boom.

The company behind the Claude chatbot has publicly filed its S-1 prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the document that gives would-be shareholders their first full look under the hood before an initial public offering. When the stock arrives, it will trade under the ticker ANT.

A Revenue Rocket With a Fuel Bill to Match

The headline is growth. Anthropic brought in $16.3 billion in revenue during the six months that ended in June, more than three times the $4.6 billion it collected in all of 2025.

Spending is climbing just as fast. The company poured $9 billion into AI infrastructure in the first half of the year, already outpacing the $7.3 billion it spent across all of last year.

The customer base is more concentrated than the eye-popping sales might suggest. About a fifth of revenue came from just two customers, with the rest flowing from a limited circle of clients.

On paper, the losses are enormous. The filing shows a net loss of $80.7 billion through June, though most of that stems from accounting charges rather than cash leaving the building. The company lost $42 billion in 2025.

The long-term commitments dwarf both figures. Anthropic has locked in more than $430 billion in cloud computing deals with partners that include Amazon and Google, both major investors in the company. Add cancellable and smaller agreements, and the potential tab climbs as high as $637 billion.

A Second Mega-IPO Tests Wall Street’s Nerve

The listing will show whether investors still have room for another newcomer carrying a towering private valuation. SpaceX opened that door when it went public on June 12 at $150 per share and finished its first trading day about 20% higher.

For everyday investors who rarely get in on the AI boom before big money cashes out, a public listing offers a chance to own a slice of one of the industry’s most closely watched names.

Anthropic is led by CEO Dario Amodei, who co-founded the company with his sister, Daniela Amodei, now its president. It has built a strong foothold with businesses through Claude, the popular programming assistant Claude Code and its workplace tool, Claude Cowork.

The Risks Anthropic Is Putting in Writing

The prospectus is no victory lap. Anthropic warns that its models could develop abilities the company does not see coming, and it walks through a range of scenarios in which its AI could cause harm in the real world. Such events, the company cautions, could leave it unable to cover the resulting damages.

Those warnings echo an essay Amodei published in early September urging the industry to slow work on frontier AI models, out of concern that they could grow too powerful for people to control. The piece, along with comments from current and former AI researchers, rattled the industry and stirred fears that the technology could one day threaten humanity itself.

Many experts reject that doomsday framing. They argue the real dangers are more immediate: weak cybersecurity, and people or governments using AI for identity theft, discrimination and the displacement of workers. For Black workers and families, who have long raised alarms about biased technology in hiring, housing and lending, those concerns land close to home.

A Rocky Road With Washington

Anthropic’s relationship with the Trump administration has been tense. An export control directive ordered the company to cut off access to its powerful Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for foreign nationals in the United States and abroad, effectively forcing it to take the models offline. Access returned on July 1 after the Commerce Department lifted the controls at the end of June.

In February, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled Anthropic a supply chain threat after the company refused to let the Pentagon use its models to build fully autonomous weapons or conduct mass surveillance of Americans. Anthropic has sued the Defense Department to overturn that designation.

The temperature has since cooled. In a Sept. 2 interview with Axios, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the company had moved back into the White House’s good graces.

Whether Wall Street proves as forgiving as Washington is the next test Anthropic has to pass.
