Brandon Miller and life after LaMelo Ball

Charlotte has a new face of the franchise, and it just paid him like one.

Brandon Miller agreed Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, to a contract extension with the Charlotte Hornets worth $209 million over five years, according to his representatives. The deal extends his rookie contract and would begin with the 2027 to 2028 season, when he would otherwise have been a restricted free agent. It averages more than $41 million per season.

Why did the Hornets pay Brandon Miller?

He broke out last season. Miller averaged 20.2 points and 4.9 rebounds while making 38.3% of his shots from beyond the arc in 65 games. Those numbers made him one of the top young scorers in the league.

Staying on the court was a big part of that progress. The season before, he played in only 27 games. Injuries had raised questions about whether he could become the reliable star Charlotte hoped for.

His presence made a huge difference. Charlotte won 41 games and lost 24 when Brandon Miller played, compared with three wins and 14 losses when he did not. That gap showed how much the team depended on him on both ends of the floor.

How did Brandon Miller help Charlotte’s turnaround?

Miller and rookie Kon Knueppel led a surprising push in the second half of the season that carried Charlotte into the postseason tournament for the final playoff spots. Knueppel, the No. 4 pick in the 2025 draft, made an immediate impact as a rookie.

The Hornets lost in their second game of that tournament, falling one step short of the playoffs. The tournament gives teams that finish seventh through 10th in each conference a chance to earn the final playoff spots.

Miller missed part of the early season with a shoulder injury before returning to lead the surge. The injury kept him out during a stretch when Charlotte struggled badly.

Is Brandon Miller healthy now?

Yes. He had surgery in May to improve the stability of his shoulder and has fully recovered. He has played in the preseason for Charlotte.

Shoulder stability surgery is often done to prevent repeated dislocations or slips that can sideline a player. Miller’s recovery means he should be ready for a full workload when the regular season begins.

What role will Miller play this season?

A bigger one. Charlotte traded longtime franchise cornerstones LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges this offseason, leaving Brandon Miller as the team’s top option heading into his fourth season. Ball had been the face of the franchise since Charlotte drafted him in 2020, and Bridges had spent his entire career with the team.

Ball landed with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he joins Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels.

NBA general managers ranked Charlotte among the teams with the best offseason moves in their annual preseason survey, behind the Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. The moves signaled a clear shift toward building around younger players.

What does the extension mean for Brandon Miller’s future?

It locks in a franchise player. The Hornets selected Miller with the No. 2 pick in the 2023 draft, and the extension keeps him in Charlotte for years. Miller starred at Alabama before entering the draft.

Miller turns 24 next month. If he stays healthy and keeps improving, Brandon Miller and Knueppel could give Charlotte one of the league’s most promising young duos. The pair will be counted on to lead the offense together.

For a franchise that has not made the playoffs since 2016, the pressure is now on to turn potential into wins. Charlotte’s playoff drought is one of the longest in the NBA.
