Calais Campbell’s brother charged with murder after mother’s death

A brother of Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell has been charged with murder after police responding to a welfare check found their 71-year-old mother dead at a home in Atlanta on Tuesday, in a tragedy the family described as an overwhelming loss while asking for privacy during their grief.

The brother, 41, was booked into jail without bond and waived his initial court appearance the following day. He faces charges including murder and aggravated assault. Officers arrived at the home shortly after midday and found the woman unresponsive. A knife was recovered from the scene.

A history of mental health concerns at the address

The circumstances surrounding the death reflect a prolonged and documented pattern of concern at the property. Police records show that officers had been called to the address nine times since September for a range of reasons including a disturbance, a suspicious person report, and an earlier welfare check.

Family members had been in contact with police on multiple occasions in the months before Tuesday. A sister reported in late April that her brother had set a fire inside the home, stating he was attempting to rid the house of evil spirits, and described a situation in which he had effectively displaced their mother from her own home. Their mother told an officer in mid-April that her son had stopped taking medication prescribed to treat schizophrenia, a disclosure that added urgency to concerns already developing among family and neighbors.

The call that led to Tuesday’s welfare check came from family members who had arrived outside the home and were unable to get inside, with one of them reporting that he could see the brother inside but had been told their mother had left. Surveillance footage from a neighbor’s camera contradicted that account.

The family’s response

The Campbell family issued a public statement describing their mother as the family’s matriarch and asking for privacy as they navigate their grief. They expressed comfort in their faith and described the loss in terms of deep personal devastation. No members of the family spoke publicly beyond the statement.

The Baltimore Ravens and the Arizona Cardinals, where Calais Campbell spent the bulk of his career, both expressed condolences and called for the family’s privacy to be respected during what they described as an unimaginable time.

Calais Campbell’s career and current season

Campbell, 39, is entering his 19th NFL season after signing with Baltimore in April, making him the oldest active defensive player in the league heading into the 2026 campaign. He turns 40 in September. He has accumulated 117 career sacks across more than 270 games since being selected in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent a decade before later playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins, and Baltimore Ravens. A six-time Pro Bowl selection and a first-team All-Pro, he remains one of the most decorated defensive players of his era.

The events in Atlanta represent a personal tragedy for a player whose public life has been shaped by decades of professional achievement and whose family, now diminished by loss and burdened by legal proceedings, is navigating circumstances no public statement fully captures.
