Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams will undergo testing Monday to determine the severity of a right hamstring injury that ended his afternoon in the fourth quarter of a 9 to 3 loss to Minnesota.

What do we know about the injury?

Not much yet, by design. The head coach said the diagnosis arrives Monday and described the quarterback as being in good spirits afterward. His relief was specific. His first instinct watching the play in real time was that the knee was involved, and a hamstring, while capable of costing significant time, is the better of the two outcomes. Caleb Williams was ruled out for the remainder of the game shortly after reaching the locker room.

How did it happen?

On first and goal, one play after a fourth down conversion with 8:30 remaining, Caleb Williams rolled left off a bootleg with an open path to the end zone and went down awkwardly. It appeared a pursuing Minnesota linebacker clipped his heel, though the defender said afterward that he dove, missed and made no contact at all. That distinction matters for how the injury is understood. A non contact hamstring failure at full speed is a different medical event than one caused by a trip.

What happened after the play?

He yelled, grabbed at the hamstring and tried twice to stand on his own before two trainers helped him off. He spent several minutes in the injury tent and was carted to the locker room, visibly emotional, pulling a towel from his head near the tunnel to raise an arm toward the crowd. Teammates described him later walking through the locker room unassisted with no wrap on the leg, shaking hands and telling people he would be fine.

Does Caleb Williams have an injury history?

Very little. He has rarely dealt with injuries going back to college. He hurt his left hamstring on a long run during the 2022 Pac 12 championship game at USC, stayed in that game and played the following week in the Cotton Bowl. The absence of a chronic pattern is the most encouraging detail available before the imaging comes back.

How did the offense function without him?

It did not score. Tyson Bagent replaced him with Chicago deep in Minnesota territory, and the Bears ran two plays inside the 6 yard line without reaching the end zone. A 23 yard field goal attempt that would have tied the game was blocked. Bagent did lead an eight play drive in the closing minute, reaching the red zone on catches from Luther Burden III and Rome Odunze before two incompletions and a sack on the final snap. Teammates praised his poise.

Why did the offense collapse?

Minnesota blitzed on 78 percent of dropbacks and dismantled the passing game. On throws of 10 or more air yards, Caleb Williams finished 1 of 4 with an interception, a week after going 7 of 11 for 160 yards and a touchdown on the same throws. The coach pointed to seven first half penalties, turnovers, the blocked kick and wasted red zone trips.

How unusual was the drop off?

Historically so. Chicago scored 59 points the previous week against Carolina. The 56 point swing from one game to the next is the second largest in the Super Bowl era.

What comes next?

Monday’s results. Everything about Chicago’s season shape depends on whether Caleb Williams misses one week or several.
