Chadwick Boseman’s estate fight is no longer mainly about cash. His widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, told a Los Angeles court on Sept. 24 that nearly every dollar has already been paid out. That includes more than $1.7 million she says she has paid Carolyn and Leroy Boseman since 2022. What his older brothers, Derrick and Kevin Boseman, want now is a say in how the Black Panther star’s name, image and story get used.
The brothers filed their petition in July on behalf of their parents and asked the court to remove Ledward as administrator. Ledward, 35, says the case is a publicity move built on false claims. Her response comes six years after Boseman died of colon cancer at 43, without a will, in August 2020.
Why are Chadwick Boseman’s brothers suing his widow?
They say the job was never finished. The brothers point to the court’s Oct. 4, 2022, order for final distribution, which gave Ledward 50% and each parent 25%. They argue the probate case still isn’t closed. They also say Ledward signed contracts with third parties involving the actor’s image and intellectual property without consulting his parents. According to The Blast, they want attorney Jason Rubin appointed as the new administrator, a bar on Ledward signing major estate contracts without the family’s approval and copies of existing agreements.
One detail gets lost in the noise. Leroy and Carolyn Boseman assigned their interests in the estate to Boseman Family LLC. That gives the brothers a real seat at the table, even though they are not legal heirs.
Where did the Chadwick Boseman estate money go?
Ledward’s filing gives a detailed accounting. It lists two bank accounts holding roughly $151,558 and $241,180, a $40,000 life insurance policy and 100 shares of Chadwick Boseman Inc. valued at nearly $3.4 million. TMZ reported that the filing shows $1.5 million sent to his parents in May 2023, another $260,000 later that year and just over $4,000 in December 2024.
The only asset not yet paid out is a roughly $300,000 IRA at City National Bank. Ledward says the bank held it back because the brothers demanded it. She also says she sent Derrick and Kevin $75,000 each in residuals at their parents’ request. She adds that she gave more than $300,000 of her own money to Derrick’s four children.
What does the documentary have to do with it?
Almost everything. Ledward says she is working with Words + Pictures and securing an offer from Searchlight Pictures for a film about her husband. She says both sides of the family received identical paperwork with equal terms, and the Boseman relatives then asked producers for separate deals. She also created the Chadwick Boseman Foundation for the Arts and licensed his play Deep Azure to Shakespeare’s Globe in London. Every one of these projects comes back to the same fight over who gets to speak for Chadwick.
How are fans reacting online?
The split online looks a lot like the split in court. Under a Jasmine Brand Instagram post, some commenters said that as his wife she has the final word, while others sided with his family and raised questions about his final days. In a 2020 letter, the family’s attorney asked Ledward’s legal team to preserve data from Chadwick’s phones and computers. Nothing in the filings shows wrongdoing or changes the cause of death.
What is the lesson for Black families?
This is the part that hits home. Boseman built wealth and a cultural legacy in a short and brilliant run. He married Ledward on Aug. 21, 2020, one week before he died, and his brother Derrick officiated the wedding. Because he had no will, the law and the courts decided who would handle his estate. A signed plan could have settled most of this at a kitchen table instead of in a courtroom.
Too many of our families lose land, money and peace for the same reason. The brothers’ attorney had not responded to requests for comment. A judge will decide what happens next.
