Cooper Flagg’s rarest card has a new owner and a very interested franchise

The most coveted basketball card of the year has surfaced. Cooper Flagg’s one-of-one rookie debut patch autograph card, the only copy in existence, was pulled from a box on a live stream at a Rhode Island card shop Monday night, immediately drawing speculation about what it might eventually sell for.

Members of RhodyBreakers, a group that opens trading card boxes on live streams for clients as part of a retail operation called Baseball Cards of Rhode Island, were broadcasting when they pulled the item. Its discovery ended a search that began when the set was released last week.

It was signed by Flagg at Fanatics Fest last month. The fabric patch came from the jersey worn during the first half of his NBA debut, a game-worn piece that sold separately for $1 million in February. The combination of the autograph and a verifiable game-worn material makes the one-of-one designation particularly significant in the current collector market.

What the card might be worth

A one-of-one rookie debut patch autograph from a player of Flagg’s profile has no direct comparable, but the market has offered some reference points. The highest price paid for any item of his was $366,000 at a March auction. A similar one-of-one item featuring Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes sold for $1.11 million last year, which set a recent benchmark for what the top item from a highly anticipated rookie class can fetch.

Whether the item would reach or exceed that number at auction depends on factors including current market conditions, the timing of any sale and how Flagg’s career develops between now and when it eventually changes hands.

The Mavericks offered a remarkable trade

Before the item was found, the Dallas Mavericks had entered the story in an unusual way, publicly offering what they called a bounty in exchange for the card. The team’s offer included two premium season tickets for 32 years, a signed and game-worn Flagg rookie jersey, a postgame photo with the player, a private photo shoot with the Rookie of the Year trophy, an expenses-paid road trip with the team and other perks.

The offer reflected how much the franchise values it. Whether the finder has any interest in trading rather than selling at auction remains to be seen.

The broader rookie card release

The Flagg one-of-one headlined the first batch of rookie debut patch autograph items from the 2026 NBA draft class, released as part of the Topps Chrome Update set last week. Other players from the Class of 2025 also have cards in the set, including Kon Knueppel and Dylan Harper, though none carry the singular status of the Flagg item.

Rookie debut patch autograph items are among the most sought-after in modern sports collecting because they combine a first-year player’s autograph, verified game-used material and extreme scarcity. When a player’s career trajectory makes them one of the most anticipated prospects in years, the top item in that class becomes a focal point for collectors and investors alike.

Flagg won Rookie of the Year and has been one of the more compelling stories in the NBA this season, and his debut jersey selling for seven figures earlier this year established a market valuation for his memorabilia that puts the potential ceiling for the item in historically notable territory.

The owner now holds one of the most valuable sports collectibles pulled in recent memory, with a franchise making the case for a trade and the auction market likely to offer something considerably different.
